  • Hello crunchynutcornflakes,

The core of your issue centers on the line in your Diagnostic Report that reads:

    File Scan Data-->
    File Mismatch: C:\Windows\system32\Slsvc.exe[6.0.6000.16509]

This means the file has been Tampered, Modified or has become Corrupt. Vista see this as an attack to bypass it's Licensing security.

To resolve the issue, you need to either repair or replace the file with a known-good one (of the proper file version)

First try repairing Windows using System Restore:

    1)    Reboot Vista into Safe Mode

    2)    Go to Control Panel

    3)    On the left hand side of the Control Panel window, Click on "Classic View"

    4)    Double-click "Backup and Restore Center"

    5)    On the left hand side of the window, click "Repair Windows using system restore"

    6)    Select "Choose Different Restore Point", Put a check in the box that says "Show restore points older than 5 days", select the restore point that corresponds to the date Before you first noticed the issue.

    7)    Click the "Next" button.

    8)    Reboot back into Normal mode

    9)    Vista should no longer be in Reduced Functionality mode

If that doesn't work, we'll try doing a System Scan. The scan will look for bad Vista files and will attempt to repair them, if possible.

    1)    Login to Vista in Normal Mode (not safe mode)

    2)    Launch an Internet Browser

    3)    Type: %windir%\system32\ in the browser's address field

    4)    Scroll down till you find the file cmd.exe

    5)    Right-click the file and select 'Run as Administrator'

    6)    In the CMD window, type: sfc /scannow

    7)    Reboot twice and see if that resolves the issue.

If neither of these sets of steps resolves the issue, my only other suggestions would be either to contact Vista support at http://support.microsoft.com or reinstall Vista.

    Thank you,
    Darin MS

p.s.  In addition to the On Disk Mod-Auth, on the line 'TTS Error:' I see "K:20090226143337727- M:20090109130922764-"  These are Time Stamps  for when the "K" (or Kernel Mode Tamper) and the "M" (or Mod-Auth Tamper) occured.  The "M" is normal for your type of issue, but the "K" is not.  While I am not completely sure, the "K" suggests that you may have some sort of Malware that is attempting to tamper the Kernel.  So once you resolve the On Disk Mod-Auth issue, I strongly suggest scanning your computer with an Anti-Virus program of your choice as well with the OneCare Safety Scanner for Vista (http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/whatsnew.htm) The Safety scan can sometimes find things that others might miss.

As I said, I'm not sure, so it could be nothing, but doing the scans can't hurt and it's better to be safe then sorry.

  • hey darin, thanks for taking the time to try and help me out, i tried both solutions but there are problems unfortunately. i tried running system restore but i dont have any restore points which is strange because im pretty sure i made one a month ago. i tried running cmd.exe but it crashes everytime and i get an error message, something like "windows command processor has stopped working".

i did run some anti-virus programs and found a trojan, thanks for the heads up. i'm gonna try running some of the repair tools from my vista cd and see if that works in the meantime.

  • Hi crunchynutcornflakes,

Yep, the missing restore points is usually a good indicator you have a malware infections.  The malware doesn't want to leave it's new home and will make it difficult for you to clean them out.  Many will delete restore points, disable your ability to get Automatic Updates, disable some Anti-Virus programs (usually if they are not up to date)...and some even make it impossible to browse to some Anti-Virus web sites.  All and all, nasty stuff and I'm sorry to hear you have to deal with it.

If you have any problems cleaning your system, contact PC Safety, they are a Microsoft group that provides free assistance with Malware infections.
