Windows 7 Stuck on loading screen, but plays logon sounds

  Good day,

  I am busy working on a laptop with a very strange problem. It shows the loading screen with the flashing Windows logo and at the point where it is supposed to go to the logon screen, the loading screen freezes, but the machine continues to boot up. (can hear the startup sound and when the password is entered, it plays the logon sounds etc..)

  I've tried booting up with a Windows 7 disk to do a startup repair, but it does exactly the same. Also tried to boot into safe mode, but hangs up on the status screen when loading safe mode.

  I suspect it has something to do with the display card. Any ideas on what it might be?
