Installing PS 2010 on SharePoint 2010 farm - install to ALL servers? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Last time I went through this I was doing a bulk SharePoint/Project Server install, and had to install PS on every SharePoint server before I could join servers to the farm.

This time I have a SharePoint 2010 farm with five servers: Two WFE, three App servers. I want to install Project Server 2010 Sp1 to be enabled on one server. Do I really have to install Project Server to ALL FIVE SharePoint servers?

    Thanks!

Answers

    • When you install Project Server 2010 to a farm, Project Server 2010 has to be installed to every application server and Web server in the farm
    • That is the reason you have to buy PS licences for every server in the farm
    • And that is the reason you have to deploy PS updates and SP to every server in the farm

Sorry for the earlier response going in a different direction. I misunderstood the question a little.

  • You will need to install SP1 on all the servers.

Start with the server which hosts your Central Admin. Then install on the remaining application servers. Then do on the web front end servers.

Run the SharePoint Configuration wizard only whn you finish installing SP1 on all the servers in the farm.

Another precaution you need to take is that run the SharePoint Configuration wizard on one server at a time.

  • Just to clarify - I'm asking if I have to install PROJECT SERVER on all five servers. They're already all patched and psconfig'd on SP1. (And doing the April 2012 CU this morning)

  • You answered the question - thanks! But I'm not sure about this:

    >That is the reason you have to buy PS licences for every server in the farm

Are you honestly saying that if I have an existing SharePoint farm with, say, six application servers and eight web front ends that to set up Project Server for 25 people (Install as an active service on one app server) I would have to pay for 14 server licenses?
