The sfc / scannow Nightmare in Windows XP Media Centre RRS feed

  • Question

  • Note: I'm not sure if this is the correct forum but I could not find any others for XP issues.

    Something has corrupted my keyboard drivers.  When I delete the and reinstall the dame issue. (the !) on the drivers in device manager and in the properties it says "Windows cannot load the divice driver....the driver may be corrupt (code 39)
    As usual the trouble shoot is useless as it just tells you how to delete and reinstall, not what to do if this fails.
    The next step I did was to run SFC/ SCANNOW which was fine as long as it requrired the main CD.  Now it asks for "Windows Profesional CD2".
    We'll that's great but it doesn't realy know what it wants.

    I have put in the following CD's and it rejects them all
    .Windows Media Centre CD1
    .Windows Media Centre CD2
    .Windows Media Centre updates for version 2005
    .Windows Service Pack 2
    .Windows Service Pack 3

    I have seen this issue before but can't remember how to resolve it.

    If only MS could test these things before releasing them .... that's a unique idea, I wonder why nobody thought of it before.
    As you can see I am not too happy.

  • Additional info
    The keyboard is a standard MS PS2 and does work on my other PC.
    I think this may have come about after uninstalling Adaptec VideOh! DVD software as it is the only thing that happened near the event.
    All keyboard drives have the ! on them so I think it is not the drivers and whatever they connect to.
    The other drivers are;
    . Microsoft eHome MCIR 109 Keyboard
    . Microsoft eHome MCIR Keyboard
    . Microsoft eHome Remote Control Keyboard Keys

    I hope this helps

  • Hello alliz55,

    Since your question  regarding Windows XP Media Center Edition does not have to do with Windows Genuine Advantage, regretably, it is off topic to this forum.

    However, you may find an answer in this search of the MS KB files for "sfc":

    http://support.microsoft.com/search/default.aspx?query=sfc&catalog=LCID%3D1033&mode=r

    In particular, this article may be of help:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909059

    One of the best sources of Media Center help I know of is this one:  http://thegreenbutton.com/default.aspx

  • If you have a non-Microsoft (e.g., Dell) CD, and you attempt to run sfc /scannow, sfc may report the CD is not the right one, even if you're sure. The reason is that Microsoft's own CD labels read "Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 CD". If your CD is labelled something else, sfc will fail to accept it. Here's how to change it.

    Delete %windir%\inf\fp40ext.pnf

    Open %windir%\inf\fp40ext.inf, and scroll down to the last ten lines in the file where you'll find these three lines:

    WKS_CD_NAME = "Windows XP Professional CD-ROM"
    SRV_CD_NAME = "Windows XP Server CD-ROM"
    SP_CD_NAME = "Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 CD"

    Insert your WinXP (with SP3) CD in the drive; in Explorer's left pane, scroll down to the CD drive letter and write down the CD Title (mine reads "WIN_PRO_XP3").

    Pick the one of the three text lines in step 2 that is related to the service pack you're trying to use.

    Type a semicolon (";") in front of the line that you need to change. That makes it a comment, so it is no longer read by sfc.

    Duplicate the same value name, but type in the actual title from your CD. Here's what I did:

    ;SP_CD_NAME = "Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 CD"
    SP_CD_NAME = "XP_PRO_SP3"

    Save the edited fp40ext.inf file, and retry sfc /scannow.  It works!

    What if your HP / Dell disc has no label at all and just appears as CD Drive (E:) in Explorer?

    Start from scratch, and post your OWN problems in your OWN thread, and include an MGADiag report if you’re having activation/validation problems.

    Most of the time, the problem with installing or reinstalling Media Center is that the user is not using proper Media Center installation disks – there are two disks, and you CANNOT (contrary to some reports) just install using the XP Pro disks.

    To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
    Once saved, run the tool.
    Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
    To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
      - **in your own thread**, please

    Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine, but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!
