my computer originally came with vista but it died, and some techs fixed it and installed windows 7 in the process. It is a genuine version and i have a product key. How could  i fix this? Also, I ran the diagnostics and this is what came up:

    Windows OS version: 6.1.7601.2.00010100.1.0.048

What the techs installed may have been genuine for them - but not for you.
They installed a KMS client version of Windows 7 - which can only be used in conjunction with the proper KMS Server. It's a Volume license type - meaning that it is sold only in bulk for use within the purchaser's organisation, and cannot legally be sold to or used by anyone outside the organisation.

You should return to the techs and demand that they correct the problem, either by installing a legal version of Win 7, or by reverting your system back to its original OS.

  • i have gotten this before and it was fixed, but the thing is that i forgot how i fixed it. Also, i do have a product key for it, does that make a difference? And the problem is I am at school very far from the people that did it for me. Is there any sort of quick fix?

    thanks

You have a product key for what? - the original OS, or the new one?
If it's for the new one, and is NOT the same as the one showing in the report, then you could try using the Change Product Key link in the System Properties page - it may work.

If it's for the old one, then it will only work on the old OS - which you'd have to reinstall.
