Run other Programs on WHS RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,
On the WHS can you run other window programs?  I have a PVR program(GBPVR) that I usually run on my regular PC, but since I'm going
to set-up a separate server I was wondering if I could move it to the server.  The server will have 2 Gb of ram.

  • Windows Home Server technically can run several programs, which are designed to run on Windows Server or client.
But this is not supported, potentially may mess up with the components of Windows Home Server,  may violate the EULA and could run into issues with the limited disk space on drive C:. A virus scanner should be definitively aware of the specialities of Windows Home Server.
All applications, which require Active Directory, will also not work.
This being said, many people have tested applications on WHS, which are not designed for this specific OS. Sometimes with success, sometimes not.

  • Most programs that will run on Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP will be fine, but it's not supported, and in the general case not recommended. In the case of PVR software, you will need to get your tuner working in Windows Home Server. You'll need to allocate storage for recordings, too. Probably you will want to record to a location outside of your server's shares (and to a disk not in the storage pool) for performance reasons, then you'll have to move data into the shares if you need it there.

In the home theater realm of applications, the recommendation is to run a "two box" system, where you have a home theater PC that deals with display, transcoding, etc., and that PC uses your home server as additional network storage.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • Ken & Olaf,
Thanks for your replies.  I will take your advice and not run the PVR on the MHS.
