0x8004FE21 error message after HDD clone RRS feed

  • Question

  • As many others on the forum, I'm plagued by the 0x8004FE21 genuine error messages.

I am using Norton Ghost to copy a hard drive image of an Optiplex computer with Win 7 Professional SP1 x32 to same model computers. There is no antivirus on the computer.

This are the steps I have performed so far:

    - installed Intel Rapid Storage Technology Utility Version: A02 OEM Version: 11.2.0.1006 provided by Dell Tech Support team

    - forced the rebuild of Windows License store by renaming tokens.dat at this location: %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform then reentered the Windows Product Key from the computer case (using SLUI 3) and reactivated Windows.

    - when the "non-genuine" error message was active, I followed the instructions by clicking on "resolve online now" and the windows validation tool confirmed that Windows is genuine.

    - ran MGADiag.exe  (see report below)

    Thank you for your help.

  • This may simply be caused by a bad set of Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers -

Installing the Intel Rapid Storage Drivers

try downloading and installing them from here - https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=2101&DwnldID=22194

    (you want the iata_enu.exe download)

Once complete, please reboot twice, then post another MGADiag report.

  • ... if that doesn't work, try this....

Please run the following commands in an Elevated Command Prompt

    NET STOP CRYPTSVC
    REN C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CATROOT2 CATROOT2OLD
    NET START CRYPTSVC

once complete, leave the system alone for at least an hour to rebuild the database, then reboot, and run another MGADiag report.
Note that this may delete your Update History - but all updates will remain installed, and can be viewed in the Installed Updates listing.

    Post a new MGADiag report.

  • Update: after posting this message here on Friday, I downloaded another version of the IRST drivers directly from Intel's website and that seem to have solved the issue - no new error messages since Friday on the 7 computers I did the drivers update.

At this point, I would consider the issue resolved.

Thank you for your help and contribution.
