MCSA 2003 upgrade clarification RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi all,

Just looking for a bit of clarification; I've already got my MCSA 2003 and am looking to upgrade this to 2008. I'm about to book the 70-648 (which I believe is two exams in one? 640 & 642). Is this all I need to take to upgrade or am I right in thinking there's some more?

    Thanks

  • Hi Tatie,

To upgrade your MCSA 2003 to MCSA: Windows Server 2008 you will need to take and pass two (2) exams before July 31, 2013. These exams are 70-648 and 70-646.

Normally, the MCSA: Windows Server 2008 requires three (3) exams, 70-640, 70-642, and 70-646. However, if you take the upgrade route, then upgrade exam 70-648 fulfills the requirements for 70-640 and 70-642, but not for 70-646. Therefore, you will still need to take exam 70-646 in addition to your upgrade exam 70-648 to fulfill all the requirement of the MCSA: Windows Server 2008 certification.

I wish you every success in your studies.

  • This is all you need to take to upgrade the MCSA 2003 to 2008.   Note that this exam will be retired later this year (July 31, 2013).  It covers the material in both the 70-640 and 642 exams.  I'd suggest making sure you've adequately studied prior to booking the exam.

  • Hi Tatie,

In my earlier post, I wanted to give you a reference directly from Microsoft, but the web pages for the legacy certifications are becoming harder to find. However, I finally found the page I was looking for, and here it is:

    http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/in/certification/cert-windowsserver.aspx#tab4

This page gives upgrade paths from Server 2003 certifications to Server 2008 certifications.

In the main table on this page, please see the 3rd row down which states current certification as MCSA on Windows Server 2003, and certification goal as MCITP: Server Administrator (same as MCSA: Windows Server 2008). The third column on this row gives the required exams which are 70-648 and 70-646.

I hope you are now clear on your upgrade path. Good luck in your studies.
