Exchange 2003 Message Tracking error RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I have been experiencing an error when attempting to utilize the message tracking tool within exchange system manger.  I recieve the error "The search Could Not be completed.  Check to see that the Microsoft Exchange Managment service is running on all Exchange 2000 and Exchange 2003 installations."

I have verifed that the above mentioned service is running, along with the Exchange Information Store service (verified all exchange services are running).  I have also noticed an increase in external emails from particular domains getting blocked by the intelligent message filtering even though the domain is in the exception list that should not be blocked with the intelligent message filtering - but i cannot track the messages to verify; not sure if the problems are related or not.

After a quick search on google, it appears that i am not alone in regards to this problem, but the suggestions and\or resolutions seem pretty hard to come by.

Any ideas on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated.

    thanks,

    Brett Phillips

  • Hi Brett

Thank you for posting here. My name is JohnJr and I'll be assisting you with this technical issue.

From your problem description, I understand you received an error message reporting:'Check to see that the Microsoft Exchagne Management service is running' when you utilized message tracking tool. But by checking the services.msc, you notified all the services related to Exchange were running. Please correct me is I've misunderstood.

Before we go any further, I would like to know if there's any firewall deployed ahead of the Exchange organization?

Based on my knowledge, the tcp high ports needed to be added on the Firewall for the exchange servers. This allowed the communication needed to perform message tracking from the remote site.

Besides the firewall settings, I suggest you check the Exchange 2003 Server is patched with this hotfix:

The Service Host process may stop unexpectedly in Windows Server 2003
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932762

Please apply this hotfix if it's not patched. After that, please reboot the server and check message tracking to see if this issue still comes up.

If anything remains unclear, please feel free to post back. I'm standing by to look forward to your update.

    Best Regards,
    JohnJr
