Would this be possible RRS feed

  • Question

  • Ok, so I know WHS prefers that only one external drive be connected per usb port for performance.  I have an enclosure that supports dual SATA II's and has a fan for cooling.

What I'd like to do is install two drives in the enclosure but only add one to the pool. The other drive I would not add to the pool, but instead manually assign it a drive letter to the OS and use it for backing up the data.  So basically the non-pool drive would be a fail safe that i could plug into any computer to retrieve data.

Also, PP1 has an option for adding a drive as a "backup" instead of to the pool. Any thoughts on how the same idea might work with two drives going through one usb port?  One added to the pool and the other added as the backup drive.

  • Your enclosure will probably have a built-in USB hub. Using a hub isn't recommended, but in this case would probably not be a problem. The rest should be fine, as long as your enclosure exposes the drives individually.
