Backup SYS volume? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I just installed a server backup disk for the first time while using WHS for almost 6 months now, thinking that it would backup my WHS installation (SYS) since there is no system restore option in Windows. But to my amazement I noticed it only backups my shares. I can do this in some other way by turning on folder duplication...

Am I missing something? Or isn't there any way to make sure I have a good Windows installation ready in case something gets messed up (like with system restore on other versions of Windows)?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Hi,
there is no system volume backup integrated for Windows Home Server, and there are also no good options to do so due to the WHS specials.
The only supported way to keep the data intact on a no longer running server is to perform a server reinstall.
So you are missing something, what many of us miss :-)

  • That's pretty strange, since WHS is all about backup... you can't secure your installation of the OS! Are there any plans of implementing this someday, you know of? Maybe through an add-in?

MS has never said anything about it one way or the other.

None that I am aware of.

  • Right, thanks. But client backups are stored on the backup drive too right?

  • No, the integrated backup only saves the contents of shared folders.
For backing up the backup database you can find the Add-In WHS Database Backup.

  • This makes me wonder what the use is for seperate backup disks. You have folder duplication, that multiplies (backups) the files to other drives, so if one disk files you still got the file. So server backups just do what folder duplication does too. It backups the files across multiple disks.

  • Server backup allows you to take a copy of your shares off-site. As long as your server is co-located with your home PCs, a major disaster (fire or flood, for example) that destroys that location also destroys all copies of your data.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • So a backup disk is in reality actually only in place when you use an external HDD for it, but not really when talking about an internal HDD?

    That is right.
The only case in which an internal disk comes into the discussion, would be a disk in a hot swap backplane (although for removing it you should shutdown the PC, since "ejecting" internal disks is not implemented.
