(I am assuming your netbook does not have an optical drive.)
It's likely that the edition of Office Home and Student 2007 that either (1) came preinstalled on the laptop or (2) that you downloaded to install on the laptop was not a retail licensed edition but an OEM licensed edition. If that's the case, entering
the retail product key would generate the exact error message that you are describing.

If I am right, you would need to remove the existing installation of Office from the netbook then download a full retail installation package for Office H&S 2007.
