Windows is not genuine RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a Dell computer that came originally with Vista. The motherboard bit the at the beginning of last year. During the repairs I had it upgraded to Windows 7. The repairs were done by a third party. The computer ran fine up until about a month ago which is when it started telling me Windows is not genuine. Can someone tell me if it's truly a counterfeit copy? Here is my MGADiag report:

  • You have an OEM SLP copy of Windows 7.

    Windows Product ID Type: 2
    Windows License Type: OEM SLP

This type of Windows is only valid when installed by the manufacturer at the factory and requires a specific corresponding code in the BIOS.  Your motherboard was manufactured on July 30, 2008.  Windows 7 was not released to Dell until July 24, 2009, a full year later.

    <Date>20080730000000.000000+000</Date>

This copy of Windows 7 will only self-activate when the correct code is present in the BIOS.  Hackers use an activation exploit, called a loader, to simulate this BIOS entry and fool Windows thinking that it has self-activated.  The error

    HrOnline: 0xC004C4AB

indicates that Windows Activation Technology has indeed detected a loader on your computer.  Recent improvements to Windows now allows it to detect and bypass loaders.

There is no way that this OEM SLP copy of Windows 7 can be valid on this computer.

OEM SLP copies of Windows cannot be used to upgrade a computer.  That requires a Type 5 Retail license.  You need to restore the original Vista that shipped for this make and model and then upgrade with a retail upgrade copy of Windows 7 or purchase a full license copy of Windows 7 and reinstall.

You should talk to whoever repaired your computer and have them fix it right.
