  • General discussion

  • - Remove the choice to "ask a question" or "start a discussion". It's an extra step and all it does is add another layer of confusion for the typical user. It's best to keep questions and discussions separate and just add forums specific to discussions in each category.
    - Remove the default avatars entirely. Besides the fact that they resemble swastika's, they also look like two year old chicken scratch. Not flattering for an official Microsoft forum.
    - Remove the "Related Topics" found when creating a new thread. When a user reaches the point of no return IE "Thread Creation" they're beyond searching for an answer. Leave searching for a thread separate from creating a thread. In reality, this just promotes old thread bumping and creates more work for moderator.

  • I have to say that I agree. Especially about the Question/Discussion choice. Almost all Discussions are in fact chosen in error by novice users.

  • I agree that that there are some forums, such as this Suggestions forum, where Discussion may be the more appropriate choice. The people who contribute to this group know that, and usually make the Discussion choice. But it does not really matter if they do not.

But for the average topic forum (e.g. the Visual C++ forums that I hang out in), Question is almost invariably the correct choice, and most uses of Discussion are novice user error.  This has serious negative consequences for the OP, because some responders will not bother with a Discussion thread.

In some previous version(s) of the forum, the Question/Discussion choice was made by a drop-down, and there was an even greater prevalence of incorrectly chosen Discussion choices.

If you want to go back to a situation where there is no default selected, I think it is essential to have some kind of pop-up for the Discussion choice that emphasizes that you should not make this selection if you are expecting any kind of answer to your post.

  • As this is a discussion.

That this is started as a discussion shows that there is a need for this option.

The default avatars are at least better than in past so that can for me stay.

With removing the related topic search I agree and in my opinion eliteness from the creators, only on a simple line of text you can not see if something is related.

  • I don't think there is a problem with "ask a question" or "start discussion button", its not complex programming or script writing. We can ask a question if we have problem and start discussion. Its true more we try to search for the answer more we get to know the product.

I can agree a bit with you if you are person hard to find time to spend in the fast paced environment on creating a new thread time can be saved without  checking " related topics" found button when creating a new thread.
