Software declared not genuine two years after purchase RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm using a Gateway laptop, which my dad bought two years. It came with Vista Home Premium, which I installed the first night we had it. It's been working perfectly fine, but lately dialogue boxes have been popping up saying my product key is invalid, and I'm not sure why. Today it wouldn't let me log in without clicking on a 'reduced functionality' button, and another box just popped up saying I may be a victim of product counterfeiting. I haven't seen anyone with a similar problem through search, but I have absolutely no idea what to do.

    So,

Why is my product key being declared invalid nearly a year after purchase and installation? Was there a time limit on its usage?

    How do I fix it?
