restore using product key and system recovery CDs RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have Compaq Presario desktop computer, it is 3 years old. It comes with windows XP media edition. It’s loaded with unwanted software which made it very slow. My cousin took it to let fix to unprofessional repair place and they replaced windows XP to windows vista but I saw now the windows vista is not genuine and not validate. He took it back to this guy he changed back to windows xp and it's the samething not ginuine.   I have the system tool CD, system recovery CD and also I saw a label on the back with MICROSOFT WINDOWS XP PRODUCT KEY. How can I restore or download using CDs and product key?

  • Hello jijos,

My suggestion would be to use the HP/Compaq system recovery discs that you have to put back the original, genuine Windows that it had when you purchased it new back onto the computer.  Be sure to backup and offload any data, docs, pix, music, email etc that you want to save before you run the recovery discs.

If you need instructions on how to do that, visit the support page for your model of Compaq at http://www.compaq.com/country/cpq_support.html

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
    Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.

Please also tell us the Version and edition of Windows quoted on the COA Sticker (do NOT post the Key!) - this will allow us to advise on the easiest way to get back to a genuine state.
Note that if, as you say, you have the Recovery disks, you can always use them to get the system back to its original state. Using the disks will delete ALL data on the hard drive, so you must back up to external media first.
