Getting Started Guide for WHS 2011 - Is it available yet? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,

I've posted about this before but now that I've got my copy of the software (turned up today), is there going to be a getting started guide?  I've already seen the version that is available here http://download.microsoft.com/download/4/5/C/45CD1DC6-9204-44DD-999B-24B50A9144B6/Getting_Started_Guide_for_Windows_Home_Server_2011.docx

But that is dated January 2011 and talks about "Vail".  When can we expect the final release?  Online help is great but doesn't help my customers who need to get just get it going.  I'm a small system builder and don't envy anyone let alone myself having to write our own guides.  It's an area I'm not an expert in.

Michael Leworthy did say there will be a new updated this month (10th May comment made) so I'm hoping something is around the corner.  Michael, if you or someone in the know does know when we can expect the "Getting Started Guide", I'll hang on.

Any help Microsoft can give us small system builders greatly received.

    Many thanks

  • So there isn't going to be an .DOC or PDF version like there is in v1 product?

  • yes, it's coming.  I think from the team creating it, it looks to be dropping next week with the web refresh.

  • Michael,

That's great news.  Looking forward to getting it.  Will there be a post with it's download location on the forums?

    Regards

  • Note
    • You cannot run the Launchpad on any additional computers that run a Windows Server operating system.

    • Server administrators cannot use the Launchpad or Remote Web Access on a computer that is running Mac OS X10 or later to open the server Dashboard and manage the server

I'm confused by the second bullet point from the online help (Launchpad). Is this a typo?

OTOH, I can't get my Mac OS-X 10+ Launchpad to start.... just gives me network connectivity errors.

  • There's an outdated link on this WHS 2011 product page.

The link to the Windows Home Server Product Guide takes you to a Product Guide dated January 2009 for WHS V1.

  • And the link to the "Getting Started Guide for Windows Home Server 2011" on this page takes us to a document that in some places refers to "Windows Home Server 2011", and in other places (at least five that I counted, plus an email reference for press enquires that is vailp@microsoft.com) continues to refer to "Vail". I do hope that this is not supposed to be the final version of the Getting Started Guide?

  • Hi Micheal,

Any dates and times on when the new user guide will be with us?  Likewise for the web refresh.

    Many thanks

  • The last stage of web refresh is almost complete, as the team is doing the final banner changes on Monday/Tuesday and some updates to the community pages and final links also this week. As per the updated guide I expect to post that also this week as it is completed and was in legal review last week.

  • The Getting Started Guide (June revision) states in the Shared Folders and Server Storage section:

"Your home server is pre-configured with the following shared folders: Pictures, Music, Videos, Documents, Recorded TV and Users".

Users? I thought that this was dropped from WHS 2011? The Online Help doesn't mention such a folder, and I'm pretty sure that I ended up having to create a Users folder for myself, having had it in V1.

  • Also, you have two links mistakenly swapped in the "Public Resources" section. The "Installation Instructions" link takes you to the "General Help" web pages, and the "General Help" link takes you to the "Release Notes" web page, which includes the latest installation instructions...
