when I clicked start a message appeared saying
'Windows could not start the Software Licensing service on Local Computer
Error 0xc004d103
see if the System File Checker can help....
System File Checker - Instructions
Click on the Start button
type in the Search box
CMD.EXE
right-click on the only file that is found
Select Run as Administrator
- the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
At the Command prompt, type
SFC /SCANNOW
and hit the Enter key
Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.
Would you tell me the full error message you receive when you use the "net start slsvc" command? Please see this thread with a similar problem - Darin may have some further data from that experience, and be able to provide a solution.

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
The 426 error you are seeing is probably caused by the fact that the Software Licensing Service is not runningPlease check that the Software Licensing service is set to startup type Automatic.
Click on Start
in the Search box, type
SERVICES.MSC
and hit the Enter key
Accept the UAC prompt that comes up
In the listing of Services, find the Software Licensing Service (SLSVC)
right-click on it, and select Properties.
make sure that the service Startup type is set to Automatic - click Apply if you've had to change anything.
Then try starting the service.
What is the result?
If you get an error message, please report back with the EXACT details.

The only error I can see in the report is that the SLS is not running - please try to start it using my instructions above, and report back.

Try: How do I reset Windows Update components?

That won't help when the SLS isn't running.

Interesting - please post another MGADiag report. To quote Darin, the forum owner..." If you receive any other error (System Error 5, System Error 57346 or System Error 54273): These occur as a result of massive file corruption. We do not know what the root cause of the corruption is and this can be caused by any situation where files could be corrupted. However, from troubleshooting others that had this issue, the likeliest causes are either Malware Infection or failing Hard Drive. "
