Very Basic question on getting my leads into the CRM... RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am running the 30 day on-line demo....  I have a few basic excel files that we get from lead generators such as Global Spec , Machine dsign etc.  So I have taken the various excel files, converted to CSV etc.

So do I need to have a custom data map that matches the headings of my source files from these lead generators?  They all seem to provide files with slightly different headings.  Or do I go in and change the headings in the excel files before importing to the standard Microsoft Dynamics contact/account data maps?

I am missing the basic mechanics of what I should expect to to I think....  Just curious what most people do out there.

    Thank you

    Tom

  • Hi,

You can create 3 different data maps and name them accordingly using the data import feature as opposed to using the standard template and manipulating your source files inordinately. Once you have created the 3 data maps, simply select the correct one each time you import the csv files. That should save you having to manipulate the Excel files each time you need to perform an import.

For further information, use the help button within CRM and search for 'data map'.

  • Thank you for the help.  When I import the csv files, they contain info/ fields that seem to be located in two different catagories of records in the CRM, meaning some of the fields are found in the "account" type record, and some in the "contact" type record.

Should I ignore this and just create custom fields for the source files I am bringing in, and then import the file once?  seems to take me two imports now, once as an account type record and once as a contact, to get all the data and get the contacts under the account.

Yes I have much to learn, and many books at this point.

    Thank you for your suggestions.
