Victim of Counterfeiting Message RRS feed

  • Question

  • My computer (originally from Lenovo running Windows XP) totally crashed and I ended up having to have it rebuilt (new motherboard, new drive, additional RAM). The tech, an individual I know who does computer repairs for a living, installed Windows 7 Home Premium on the new drive. I used Windows Anytime Upgrade to take it to Professional to see if it would resolve this issue. Once or twice a week, at least, I get a message that I may be a victim of software counterfeiting...... When I contacted the tech, he said I shouldn't be getting that message as he installed the same one he has. (That doesn't sound right, does it?) He gave me a workaround, but it didn't work. As long as I get the necessary updates I guess it's not a major problem, but there may be optional updates I can't get. The results of the diagnostic were as follows:

The Key in use is the OEM_SLP Key from Lenovo - but the motherboard is a Retail one from BIOSTAR, which cannot support such a Key. It is NOT an Anytime Upgrade Key.
There is apparently a SLIC table from Lenovo in the BIOS - which means that a hacker's Loader tool has been used to circumvent activation and validation requirements.
There is also a File Mismatch present, which may well also be the result of a Loader.
The installation of Windows is non-genuine.

Your copy of Office is also likely to be non-genuine, as it's a Volume-License-only edition - unless you acquired this through your employer or college, it's counterfeit.

Since you have changed the motherboard outside warranty conditions, you have invalidated the original license for Windows - For what version and edition of Windows was it licensed, according to teh COA sticker on the case? (there may be a workaround)

You should purchase a legal Full Retail license for Windows, and do a clean install with that - it is impossible to guarantee the integrity of a system that has had a hacker's Loader tool installed.

      SLIC            LENOVO        TC-90

  • The original PC was no longer under warranty. It was originally running Windows XP Home, but when it crashed I had no external backup to recover that from. I don't have the money to buy a Full Retail License. I will contact my tech when his father gets out of the hospital and see if he can figure this out. He had originally put on Windows 7 for IT Professionals but that first drive failed and he put the Win7 Home on the second time. It may have been his personal copy and the loader you are referring to may be the result of the workaround he suggested. He will either correct it or pay for a copy for me. Thanks for your assistance.

    You're welcome.
It's certainly not a personal copy currently installed. - it's a generic one for Lenovo's, but can only work legitimately on those machines on which Win7 was the original OS. Use in any other machine is piracy.
