About WINS service environment of Windows Server 2016 or 2019 RRS feed

  • Question

  • We are considering renewing the DC environment.

The current DC is OS 2012 R2, functional level 2008 R2, and is using the service.

I am planning to build a new DC with OS 2016 or 2019. Can I use the WINS service?

Is the use of WINS service on this OS a deprecated configuration?

Also, from the following MS information, are there any restrictions when using the WINS service?

  • Server 2019 does support WINS, WINS role can be added using usually add roles and feature wizard or using PS cmdlet Install-WindowsFeature WINS

Any reason why you are still using WINS? Its a legacy technology I would highly recommed using DNS and also disabling NetBios on all machines as its highly vulnerability and easily exploitable.

  • Hi

The Windows Internet Name Service is a legacy computer name registration and resolution service that maps NetBIOS computer names to IP addresses.

If you do not already have WINS implemented on your network, do not implement it; instead, implement the Domain Name System (DNS). DNS also provides computer name registration and resolution services, and includes many additional advantages over WINS, such as integration with Active Directory domain services.
