for some reason after i reformatted my hard drive i tried reinstalling my windows xp home disc. it worked but when i tried to validate it it didn't work. why ? RRS feed

    Your installation is non-genuine. It is based on a Product Key that was never issued by MS, and has therefore been created by a hacker's KeyGen utility.
     
    For what version and edition of Windows is your PC licensed, according to the COA sticker on the case?
    If it's Win XP Pro, then you may be able to change the Product Key to the valid one, using the Product Key Update tool  ( http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/selfhelp/xppkuinst.aspx )
    If it's anything else, then you will need to reformat/reinstall the machine using the manufacturer's Recovery System - if you don't have either the disks, or the Recovery partition, contact the manufacturer and see if they will provide them (for a price)
