Router Configuration API? RRS feed

  • Question

  • As I am assuming that there will be some sort of auto-router configuration (UPnP) to expose WHS to the outside world, will that functionality be exposed through an API for apps that may need to forward traffic to an alternate port?

  • Not sure about WHS having this integrated, but Intel has a free uPnP SDK that supports most languages.  HTHs

  • Thanks.  I already have a full UPnP scanner built into WebGuide which works pretty well forwarding ports, but as is common with UPnP, it isn't perfect.  I'd think that having user manually configure their router will limit WHS's usefulness for many users.

The most common support issue I come across is router configuration issues.  As such, I'm guessing that MS will build in some sort of auto-configuration tool to setup port forwarding and link to a dynamic-DNS domain.  Ideally, we can piggy-back on the WHS services to make this more consistent for users.

Autoconfiguration of uPnP is already built into the CTP, and so is DDNS capabilities with yourname.livenode.com.

  • I am using a Belkin FD8631 Router and when I run the router setup part I get an error message stating it doesn't support Upnp. Also when I use my livenode address i get the router home page.

You need to set up the router to work with WHS.  On the application and gaming (at least in Linksys) you have the option to set portforwarding for specific applications.

WHS requires portforwarding on ports 80, 443, and 4125.  Set these ports on both protocols to the destination ip address of your home server.
