  • Question

  • Whenever chkdsk runs on my system disk it goes into an infinite loop like below:

The type of the file system is NTFS.
    Volume label is DATA.

    WARNING! F parameter not specified.
    Running CHKDSK in read-only mode.

CHKDSK is verifying files (stage 1 of 3)...

0 reparse records processed. CHKDSK is verifying indexes (stage 2 of 3)...

15 percent complete. (1424 of 23891 index entries processed)
16 percent complete. (1705 of 23891 index entries processed)
    ...
Up to millions of percent complete and never finishes until all free space on c: is eaten up. All other disks produce normal results for chkdsk. The only thing I can think of now is to reinstall WHS on a new drive, plugged into the same SATA port so hopefully I'll get the reinstall option.

The system disk using motherboard's SATA port does not require additional drivers during installation. However some of my data disks in the storage pool are connected through a third party controller that does need driver installed before WHS can see them. My question is, how can I provide the driver to the reinstall process so when it gets to rebuilding tombstone files it can see all the disks? Do I have to do this at the F6 prompt before text setup begins or is there a point between installing OS and rebuilding tombstone where I can install the driver?

  • This FAQ goes through the reinstallation process (albeit somewhat sketchily).
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • Hi,

I also have a storage controller and NIC not recognized by WHS. After a lot of complaints of missing disks during reinstall I got to a stable state. I entered device manager and installed the drivers from there from a USB-stick. Worked fine for me.
