DCPROMO ? ! RRS feed

  • Question

  • Is this feature really needed in home server? Will it work in a corprate environment with other domain controllers or is it limited like small business server? Will versions of XP / Vista Home be able to join a home server domain, and if no why the hell not? This feature could potentially cause many problems for inexperianced users.

  • Because WHS is based on Windows Server 2003, it includes dcpromo. Inexperienced users shouldn't have a problem with this, because they won't be buying software to install on their own hardware. They'll be buying something like the HP MediaSmart Server.

As for limitations, you can run dcpromo, but you'll probably break some core functionality of WHS. And XP Home/Vista home versions will be unable to join a domain, just as at present. That would have to be added to those operating systems.

  • Also,

There has been mention that things like this, might well be removed from the RTM version

  • it should lots of people that used to run win2k3 home ( probably illigal unfortunate ) will try to use dcpromo if there are familiar with it. So yes functions that will not work in WHS should be removed or atleast hidden.
