Unable to install WGA, Internet explorer Beta, Windows Beta Bit Defender RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a genuine windows copy. which I am running on my Compaq PC for a long time. After installing WGA I am unable to install windows Bit defender beta, Internet Explorer beta. It always errors out in the Module legitCheckControl.dll though I have the same genuine product key with my Compaq computer from 2 years back and I am able to get security updates.

I tried deleting Legitcheckcontrol.dll and reinstalled it but it did not work. I am trying to manually install windows genuine advantage through http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?linkid=69498 but it is giving me the following error

    Error Signature

    Appname: wgatray.exe AppVer: 1.5.540.0 Mod name: legitcheckcontrol.dll

Windows genuine Advantage Notifications (KB905474) Version - 1.5.0540.0

When I use http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/SuccessfulActivation.aspx?displaylang=en&sGuid=50e1679b-46ad-4d13-a778-e17c57f44070, my windows version passes validation.

Please suggest, I am unable to upload Windows defender updated beta and Inernet Explorer Beta and KB905474 does not complete crashing in vgatray.exe (Mod legitcheckcontrol.dll)

  • Locate the file:

    C:\ Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Windows Genuine Advantage\data\data.dat

    and delete it.

Reboot, send your browser to http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/ and click "Validate Windows".

If that doesn't work please try the following: Open internet explorer, click "tools" then "manage add-ons" then find the Windows Genuine Advantage ActiveX control and put it as "ENABLE". If the setting is only allowed to be changed by administrators, then you must go to your C:\windows\system32 and DELETE the LegitCheckControl.dll file. Then go to http://www.microsoft.com/genuine and revalidate. That will reload the DLL file correctly.

Reboot your computer after this. Or try the direct 905474 download, then install: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=69498

  • Sobhan,

Please follow these steps for assistance:

Step 1 is to download and run the utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012, then click the Windows tab, Copy to Clipboard, then paste the report into a response message in this thread.

Step 2 is to look on the computer or with the materials you received with the computer or with Windows to see if you have a Certificate of Authenticty (COA).  If you have one, tell us about the COA.  Tell us:

    1.  What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center?

    2.  Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?

    3.  Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?  In your case we would expect to see Compaq.

    4.  DO NOT post the Product Key.

Not sure what to look for?  See this page for reference:  http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/en/coa.mspx
