  • Question

  • Hi there,

i'm trying to use the app on my windows 7 x64 workstation, but it always request "administrator access" on first start. My user account is part of domain admin and local admin group, so whats the point with this message?

    Kind regards,

  • Dear Fix it Center (Beta) Customers,

    Thank you for your feedbacks.

The failure you encountered during setup using a domain administrator account is a known issue in our bug database. As a first beta release, the target audience of the application is home consumers. We will consider correcting the problem in future releases. As a workaround, you may add your domain administrator account directly as a member of the local Administartors group on the computer and re-attempt the Fix it Center (Beta) setup. Another workaround is to set up the application using a local user account in the local Administrators group of the affected computer.

Thanks again for your patronage and feedbacks!

There's a pop-up message that says "Fix it Center Setup encountered an error. An unexpected error has occurred. Please close and try to run Setup again later."

  • Same results here.  Domain connected Windows 7 x64.  Here is the exact message - "You must be an Administrator to run Fix it Center for the first time.  Please log on as an Administrator to complete Fix it Center configuration."

Tried to right-click and run as Administrator - got the same message.  Tried to right-click on cmd.exe and run as Administrator and then run it from the command line and got the same message as well.

My domain account is in the Administrators group on my system.  The only thing I haven't tried is to log into a local account that is in the Administrator's group.

  • I'm getting the same error message. On Windows 7 x64 Enterprise and Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard. Both are on a domain, but are logged in to the domain using administrator logon.

  • Hi Novanglous and those who hit the "You must be an Administrator to run Fix it Center for the first time.  Please log on as an Administrator to complete Fix it Center configuration." error message,

I'd like to get some info regarding the computers and users.

Is the setup language of the copy of Windows installed on the affected computer something other than English? If so, which language?

What is the language of the user account who hit the problem?

Was the user account used a domain user account or a local user account?

Does the user account name contain any special characters, including symbols and whitespaces?

    Many thanks for your patronage!

The system language is english, system accounts, local built-in administrator and local administrator use english, normal users use portuguese brazilian language pack, computer is in WORKGROUP - Windows 7 Enterprise Edition.

The installation was made with the built-in administrator and with a normal local administrator, same error = "Fix it Center Setup encountered an error. An unexpected error has occurred. Please close and try to run Setup again later".

No special caracters, Administrator for the built-in administrator account and Compaq for normal administrator account.

The program installs on computers that don't have language packs installed and are in WORKGROUP - Windows 7 Ultimate Edition PT-BR.

On DOMAIN both computers shows error when try to install = "You must be an Administrator to run Fix it Center for the first time.  Please log on as an Administrator to complete Fix it Center configuration"

to help us isolate the issue, could you add your current log in user to your local administrators group, and do set up again?

for "Fix it Center Setup encountered an error. An unexpected error has occurred. Please close and try to run Setup again later". issue, first you need to make sure that Microsoft certificate is being trusted, that can be checked through IE's tools/option dialogbox's content tab and click certificate button, if there is no issue there, could you enable MSI log and share the log file (see how to enbale MSI log through http://support.microsoft.com/kb/223300)

    thanks

  • Daniel,

Here are the answers to your questions:

    • Setup language = English (US)
    • User language = English (US)
    • The user I've used so far is a domain user in the domain administrator's group (which is added to the Administrator's group on the local machine)
    • The user account I'm using is all normal alphabetic characters (7 chars - all letters - no whitespace)

Let me know if you have any additional questions or would like me to try something on my end.

Last weekend I found the source of the problem, the FixitCenter_Run.exe contains an autorun.inf file, so all machines with protection against autorun.inf execution receive the error message = "Fix it Center Setup encountered an error. An unexpected error has occurred. Please close and try to run Setup again later". To reproduce install and protect the computer with Panda USB Vaccine, try to install FixitCenter_Run.exe.

File autorun.inf is dangerous, it's one of the biggest way to spread malwares, please think about don't use this kind of file in Microsoft self-extractor setup installers.

Thanks by your time and attention.

  • Hi,

i have installed Fix it Center and i get the same message "You must be an Administrator to run Fix it Center for the first time.  Please log on as an Administrator to complete Fix it Center configuration." (in german: "Um Fix it Center zum ersten Mal ausführen zu können, müssen Sie Administrator sein. Melden Sie sich als Administrator an, um die Konfiguration von Fix it Center abzuschließen.")

My setup language is german, my user language too. I'm domain-admin, added to the Administrator-Group on my local machine.

    What can i do?

    Nice greetings

    Alex

[edit] I have added my Useraccount to local Admin-Group and now it works. [/edit]

  • In my case it was a feature for disabling autorun.inf files completely via a Registry key. Create a new text file and paste the following text into it:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\IniFileMapping\Autorun.inf]
    @="@SYS:DoesNotExist"

Next, save the file with .reg extension - restoreautorun.reg, for example. Make sure you select "All Files" from Save as type box in Notepad!

Then double-click the file in Windows Explorer and answer Yes in the dialog. Restart your computer and try running FixIt setup again.

If you want to restore autorun.inf blocking later, paste the following information into a new text file and save it with .reg extension:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\IniFileMapping\Autorun.inf]
    @="@SYS:DoesNotExist"

XP users can also try using Microsoft's Autoplay Repair Wizard at: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=c680a7b6-e8fa-45c4-a171-1b389cfacdad&displaylang=en - but I am not sure it helps in case of the registry key described above.

  • Daniel,

It appears that the software isn't checking groups properly when it checks for administrator credentials.  I'm in the domain administrator group which is added to my local administrators group and it doesn't work - complaining about not having administrator access.  I have a local account that is in the local administrator's group and it works fine with that account but still doesn't work with my domain account.  Adding my specific domain account into the local administrator's group solves the problem and the program runs just fine.

So the solution (or workaround) is:  Add your domain account to the local administrator's group

Let me know if you have any questions about this.
