Unable to validate Windows 7 after upgrading (really just a repair of existing installation) RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a 2-year-old HP Dv7t-1000 that came with Vista.  A month or two ago I purchased an upgrade DVD for Windows 7 Home Premium.  I did a full install (wiping my HD) and everything had been fine. This morning I ran into major issues with drivers not working, Windows not updating, etc... After trying numerous fixes I decided to 're-install' the OS.  I selected the upgrade option so as not to lose any data.  Everything has come back pretty well, except that I can't validate Windows.  I went to http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate/DownloadValidationSupport.aspx?displaylang=en and ran the file and got this error:  Update installation failed. Error information - 0x8007043C.

Also, when I boot into regular mode everything starts up fine until I get the Windows logo.  It tells me I need to validate windows, and then whether I tell it to do it now or later I end up at a black screen (I can move the cursor but nothing else happens).

Safe mode boots fine (that's what I'm in now while trying to validate windows).

Here are my results of running the Genuine Diagnostics tool:

  • Try uninstalling the WAT Update - KB971033 - from the Programs control panel (you'll need to have View Udates set properly). Then reinstalling it from Windows updates.

  • You need that copy of Vista on the hard drive when you install or the upgrade product key is reported as invalid.  Upgrade install is not required.  You can still do a custom install which removes it but by then Vista has been verified and the info recorded.  What you don't want to do is a clean install.

The Error: 0x8007043C simply means that a service is not available in Safe Mode.
