Connecting WHS to Linksys DMA 2100

Question
-
I am thinking of building a WHS and want to make sure I will be able to set it up to serve TV programs and other media directly to my Linksys MC Extender (DMA 2100) without having to have my Vista machine up and running. The device documentation does not have any information on this nor is there any on Linksys.com... looking around Microsoft.com it only references connecting to a XBox 360. Seems like a no brainer but don't to build a WHS only to find it doesn't support my primary objective.
Any advice greatly appreciated!
BTW, I am considering using a Shuttle case, a low to medium grade C2D and 1 Gig RAM, and a couple of 1TB WD "green" HD's. If you have other recommendations or suggestions, please let me know.
Many thanks!Sunday, March 22, 2009 8:43 PM

WHS uses Windows Media Connect 2.0 to serve media. If the Linksys device can receive data from that source, it should work. (My suggestion would be to contact Linksys and ask them directly, or you could download the 120 day eval and try it for yourself.)- Proposed as answer by kariya21Moderator Sunday, March 22, 2009 8:55 PM

Does the Linksys device support playing from a network file share? If so then don't worry about whether your device will support streaming from your server. Just point it at your server's Video share.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)- Proposed as answer by kariya21Moderator Tuesday, March 24, 2009 3:34 AM

The LinkSys DMA 2100 and 2200 are Windows Media Extender Devices. They connect to a Windows Media Center enabling you to use the Windows Media Center features as if you where using Media Center Directly (XP/MCE2005, Vista Home Premium/Ultra - not sure if if it supports Windows 7?).
You can *not* use this device to access your media directly from Windows Home Server: It needs Windows Media Center for this. As Windows Home Server with PP2 installed supports streaming to Windows Media Center you can use these LinkSys devices to access your media on Windows Home Server through your media center Device.
Theo.
PS - I own a LinkSys DMA2200 and am quite happy with it. Using a direct cable link I can play music, view HD Video and live TV in perfect quality. But it is certainly not perfect. If you plan to use it to view ripped Video's you will be disappointed (It can not directly access .VOB files) and it will not play some Video formats without conversion (.wmv, .mpeg and DivX are generally OK).
No home server like Home Server- Proposed as answer by Theo van ElsbergModerator Friday, March 27, 2009 9:24 PM

Hi All,
I'm thinking of buying the Linksys DMA2200. I have WHS up and running. So I also do want to know if WHS is compatible with the Linksys DMA2200. I know Popcorn Hour does. I can buy the Linksys for 99 euro, so that would be a bargain, but not offcourse if it doesn't work. Who can give the answer?
ThanksMonday, March 23, 2009 3:51 PM -

I believe Ken and myself already answered that. If the device will play from a standard network share, yes. If it can see media served from WMC 2.0, yes. If it doesn't recognize either of those, probably not. You should check the Linksys website to see specifically what it will and will not support.Tuesday, March 24, 2009 3:34 AMModerator -
