Genuine Time Sync Problem RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I recently purchased two copies of Windows Vista Ultimate, one for my laptop, one for my desktop.

After a recent security update (windows update) it seems that my laptop is now unable to syncronize its time with time.windows.com (or any of the servers for that matter). I have double checked at the same time that my desktop can still do it.

After doing an exhaustive search on Google, and the like, I came up with the possibility that there is a problem with my laptops genuine check.

Am I looking in the right direction? Any ideas?

windows time service is running, and the actual internet time tab is blank, minus the button to change the settings, which does nothing.

I am an admin account, and i have the user level system turned off.

    Please help :)

  • Please try clicking "Validate Windows" on this page: www.microsoft.com/genuine and going through the steps to validate.  Let me know if that fails and what error you get if that happens (the error code will be gray and in brackets at the end of the message on the validation failure page.)

If validation is successful, you can reboot and see if you're having the same issue.  If it's not successful, please reboot and run the diag tool again, posting the results back here.

    Thank you!

Please post the results of the WGA diag tool (located here: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 ).  That'll help me figure out if you're genuine and what I can suggest if you're not.

If it turns out not to be a validation problem you can try looking here: Microsoft Product Support , contacting Product Support Services , or try posting in the Vista newsgroups here: http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.mspx

    Thanks!

  • Hello Again,

Thank you so much, after I installed the ActiveX control into IE everything started working again.

I guess my only concern is why I should have to install that ? Why wasn't something like this preexistent in the install base. Oh well, it works ! Thanks for your help!

    -Matthew

  • I have this same problem but I can't fix it.  I ran the validation thing and it was successful, reboots don't do anything.  I don't know what "ActiveX Control" Reapazor was talking about that he said fixed his problem.  My "Internet Time" tab has nothing in it but the "Change Settings..." button which doesn't do anything when pressed.  Please advise.

    Thanks,
    -Greg
