Can't Update Avatar RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

Not a big deal, but I thought I'd report the problem in case you're unaware.  I've tried updating my avatar a few times over the past day or so and it's not changing.

So I just tried deleting my existing avatar first.  It prompted me to confirm the deletion, I accepted, and then the forum generated a random image avatar for me.  I refreshed the page and still saw the random image.  Then I clicked Browse and selected my new avatar.  When I clicked Save at the bottom of the page it appeared to save correctly as there were no errors and the page refreshed immediately.  But when it refreshed my old avatar was back!  It wasn't the new image that I just uploaded or the previously generated random image, but my old image.  I even tried going directly to the URL of my avatar in the browser and pressing CTRL+F5 to make sure that it wasn't a caching issue, and it's definitely not (at least not on my end).

    Thanks,
    Dave

  • Hi Dave,

Thanks for reporting this. For performance reasons we cache your Avatar across data centers all over the world for a very long time. We use some techniques to try and force an update across various websites that display the Avatar, but as you have noticed they are not perfect. While we do not have any immediate plans to improve this, it's definitely on our radar. I apologize for any inconvenience that this may have caused.

    I hope this helps!

  • When I changed my avatar over a year ago, it took at least a day before it showed up. I think the large image took even longer. I believe this is normal.

  • Hi,

When I changed it a couple of weeks ago the image in my profile page updated immediately but the images on the forum took a day or so to update.

This time, even my profile page image didn't update, so it seemed to me like something was wrong.  But you're probably right; it's only been 19 hours.  Perhaps I should wait at least 24 hours, though it still seems strange to me.  I wonder if they manually moderate avatars.

    Thanks for your reply.

  • HI Dave !

I have experience the same, when i change my avatar around 6 months back, it took like a month to actually see my new avatar at MSDN Profile page and else where, although i was seeing it like on and off sometimes it appears, but the interesting thing is if you try to check this with some other machine you will see your new avatar. I am seeing your avatar as something similar to "Abacus". Is this your new Avatar Image.

    Thanks, Hasham

  • Hi Hasham,

It's probably been over ~48 hours and it's still not updated.

Yes, the new one and the old one both look like abacuses.  The difference is that the old one is vertical with a white background (I still see this one) and the new one is horizontal with kind of a border and a transparent background.

It's not important to me that it's not updating, just strange.  :)

Could you try again? Or if you'd rather not help us troubleshoot, then that's okay.

    Thanks!

  • Hi Ed,

    Thanks for your reply.

I just tried again: Edit Profile > Browse... > Save.  The page reloaded without showing any errors but it's still showing my previous avatar.  So I pressed Ctrl+F5 to refresh without the cache (IE9) and it still showed my previous avatar.  Going directly to the image URL and pressing Ctrl+F5 doesn't help either:

  • I just noticed that your small avatar (on the recent visitors list) is now horizontal. Your medium sized avatar in threads, and your large avatar in your profile is still vertical. I say wait another day.

  • Hi Richard,

Strange, my avatar in Recent Visitors is still vertical for me.  But I agree, I didn't expect the avatar to update immediately.  I was just informing Ed that I had retried (because he asked me to) and nothing had changed.

    Thanks,
    Dave

  • Hi Tim,

    Thanks for explaning the situation.

I'm in New York, so it's surprising to me that it can take days to update from a North American server (assuming that you have one).  I'm still seeing my old avatar and it's been a few days since my recent attempt to change it.  I wonder if multiple attempts resets the delay.  :)

It's not a problem for me, I was just curious why it wasn't working.  Please consider adding a prominent warning message upon changing avatars.  Something along the lines of this:

"Your new avatar is saved.  Please allow 1-4 weeks for the avatar to appear on all forum and profile pages."

  • Hi Tim,

To be clear, I had assumed caching was being used based on previous experience.  I changed my avatar once before and when my profile page refreshed, the large avatar had changed immediately, though the smaller images didn't change for perhaps a few days or so.  What surprised me this time is that my large profile avatar didn't change even after refreshing the page over the course of a few hours, so there was no indication whether the avatar was successfully uploaded or not.  Basically, it's a poor UX.

  • Hi,

FYI, my avatar still hasn't changed.  It's been ~20 days since I first uploaded the new one.  I'm not sure if this is still considered within the scope of caching "for a very long time" or if it's actually a bug, but it does seem quite strange.  :)

So the question is, "What is normal?" How long should you be expecting to have to wait?

  • Hi Ed,

My last comment was just an FYI; perhaps more like a grievance, not really a question.

Though I wouldn't mind knowing what kind of delay is normal.

The problem, as I described previously, is that even my large profile avatar didn't change when the page refreshed after uploading, so I really have no way of knowing whether the new image was uploaded successfully and caching invalidation is currently in progress or if I'm just waiting for nothing.  :)

    Thanks,
    Dave
