Help please - SyncToy 2.1 has stopped working RRS feed

  • Question

  • I last used ST 4 days ago - no problem. Today it refused to load

    Description:  Stopped working
    Problem signature:
      Problem Event Name:    APPCRASH
      Application Name:    SyncToy.exe
      Application Version:    2.1.0.0
      Application Timestamp:    4adc2ea2
      Fault Module Name:    mscorwks.dll
      Fault Module Version:    2.0.50727.4200
      Fault Module Timestamp:    4a9ee474
      Exception Code:    c0000005
      Exception Offset:    0001ed1e
      OS Version:    6.0.6002.2.2.0.256.6
      Locale ID:    3081

I uninstalled ST using RevoUninstaller, rebooted, reinstalled. Same outcome.
NET Framework 3.5 is installed, and SyncFramework 2.0

Only thing I can attribute it to is Patch Tuesday. Some Vista Professional update has screwed up ST.
I have now switched to FreeFileSync, but would like to go back to ST for ease of management, though FFS looks pretty good.
Bill Gates - if you read this - please fix. Looks like mscorwks.dll is the gremlin.
In the meantime, if any of you ST experts (I am a newbie) have any ideas, please help. Thanks

By the way, I did find when ST was working, that if set to Echo initially, it failed to delete files in the righthand folder. There are many reports of this on the net, and probably in these forums. However, easy to work around - initially run ST Synchronised, then set to Echo and it seems to work (or rather used to work) fine. Bill - please produce Version 3 asap.

  • Hi -

Sorry - the information you have posted is not sufficient for me to figure out what went wrong. You could try attaching a debugger and seeing if it gives you more information. Try uninstalling the SyncFramework 2.0 as well when you uninstall and then reinstalling SyncToy 2.1 ( it should install the framework as well).

    Thanks

  • Thanks Deepa. Uninstalled SyncFramework 2, rebooted, reinstalled, no change.

Debugger gives following. Don't know if lack of symbol search path is an issue, or how to fix it in WinDbg. Any ideas welcome? In case it helps, my Toshiba ConfigFree (which manages wireless networks) also has stopped working due apparently to mscorwks.dll so have uninstalled.

  • Has anyone got an answer to this? Mine also stopped working. I upgraded to 2.1 and same result.

  • I'm having this same issue as well.  Was there ever a resolution to it?   Thanks in advance for any info!

  • Were you every able to solve this problem?
    Friday, April 16, 2010 6:51 PM
  • I did a clean install of Windows 7, and my reinstall of ST2.1 has worked. However, I have had major problems getting it going properly (in my case to echo to an external drive) and the solution of first syncing didn't work too well either - deleting files on my notebook (was able to recover this from another backup fortunately). So with sorrow, I have uninstalled ST, and am now using FreeFileSync from SourceForge, which touch wood is going fine so far.
