Ran OneCare Live once, now no internet! RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • Hi,

Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Serpcie Pack 3 on a Pentium 4 2.40 GHz with 1GB ram.  Have been using Trend Micro Internet Security with the Trend Firewall.  DSL Modem into a Linksys switcher/router.

I got some sort of malware on that machine.  The first clue was that Malware Bytes would not open.  Second clue was TrendMicro Internet Security would run but would not update.  My Internet worked fine using IE7.  My email worked fine using Outlook.  I did an internet search reading up on it and found several people recommending this OneCare Live which was free to run.  So I ran it.  It found a bunch of registry errors and two malware items not removed by Trend Micro.  I clicked the FIX to fix everything OneCare found.  The two malwares were identified as "Trojan: Win32/AlureoN.gen!J" and "VirTool:  Win32/Obfuscator.DO" and I left them checked to be removed.  The software went through the removal process, then asked me if I wanted to report the 2 malwares to Microsoft and I clicked to do so, then I got a "cannot display the webpage" in the window where the process was ongoing.

I then checked and it said everything had been fixed but one registry entry.  I closed OneCare.  Since then I have not been able to connect to the internet on the computer where I ran OneCare.  I also can not hit the email server.  I also can not reload OneCare Live since it is web based.

When I right click on my "Local Area Connection" in Network connections and then select "STATUS"  it says it is connected.  However I can not get email or IE to work.  I can't access any messenger software either.  However Malware Bytes will now run, but it  will not update.  I can access the files on another computer in the network.  The Network Connection Details are:  Physical Address 00-07-E9-ED-83-E8, IP Address 192.168.1.105, Subnet Mask 255.255.2255.0, Default Gateway 192.168.1.1, DNS Server and WINS Server are both blank.

The internet service, DSL modem and network switcher/router is working as I'm submitting this on the same network system.  This looks like a DNS issue of some sort.  I did the REPAIR THIS CONNECTION procedure in network tasks and it had no impact.

I went through the Network Connection diagnostic.  Here is the resulting log.  I got it through the local network directly off the machine in question by saving it as a notepad file and then sharing it.

I've read the bulletin on what to do when you can not connect after running OneCare and it was no help at all.  I also tried a system restore to two different previous points prior to the OneCare operation and it said the Restore failed in both cases.

Any ideas on a fix for this?  Thanks!

  • This forum is for the discussion of the installed version of Windows Live One Care. I recommend restoring the removed registry entries per this post - http://boards.live.com/safetyboards/thread.aspx?threadid=4867  and if you need additional help with the Online Safety Scanner, this is where you can get help - http://boards.live.com/safetyboards/board.aspx?BoardID=225

  • Thanks Jim, I followed the step by step directions in that thread and found that must only work for the installed version as I have no file by the name specified in that fix. Sorry to have posted in the wrong place.

  • The installed version does not have a registry cleaner. No problem posting here. It's not always easy finding the right forum. Are you sure you enabled "show hidden files and folders"[ My Computer>Tools>Folder Options>View>Show hiden files and folders ]?
