Windows Update Error 80070426 RRS feed

  • Question

  •

I've been having problems with Windows Update - I get error code 80070426. A Microsoft forum suggested to run WGA and post results here. I'm running Windows Vista on a Dell Inspiron E1505.

I ran the validation tool and it says my windows is genuine. According to Windows Update, all but 2 updates have failed since 1/1/08. The ones that went through were for Windows Defender and Malicious software removal. I can't remember downloading or changing anything on 1/1/08. Thanks for your help.

  • Hello ANbramb,

I believe your Windows Update issue is actually just a symptom of a bigger issue.  You can see a larg number of Critical System files are showing as Mismatch, in your Diagnostic Report. Normally, a file showing as Mismatch means the file had been Modified or has become Corrupt. In your situation, this is unlikely because it is unlikely that Vista would run with so many Modified/Corrupt files.

To determine if a file is Mismatch, the Diagnostic Tool compares the signature hash of the file, recorded in the System Catalog with the signature hash of the actual file. If the file's signature has is different to the one recorded in the Systom Catalog, then the file is Mismatch.  In your case, I believe the system catalog has become corrupt.

Even though having the System Catalog be corrupt is not as bad as having all those Critical System files be modified/corrupt, it's still pretty serious and can cause randon problems to Vista (such as Windows Updates not working).

The only suggestion I can give is to reinstall Vista. I don't like telling people to reinstall and I only suggest it as the last alternative. But in this case, I don't have any other alternatives to give.

Since your copy of Vista came pre-installed on your computer, you will need to use the Windows Restore process to return Vista back to how it was when it came from the factory. Each manufaturer does the Windows Restore process differently so please see the documentation (that came with the computer) or contact the computer manufacturer for assistance in conducting the Restore.

Please make sure you backup all importent files off the computer, before you conduct the Restore.

Very sorry I couldn't be more help,

In addition, several items in the "Device Manager" section appeared with the yellow "!" mark. I unistalled all of then and ran the "Scan for Hardware changes". Most od the "!" were gone but the ones for the processors still there. There are several features of my computer that wont work now (Control Panel, AVG Firewall, properties when righ click on Computer).
