new smart switch doesnt allow connection for boot/restore RRS feed

  • Question

  • So I inherited a 3com superstack 3 24port switch for use at home. Its hard to believe i need more ports than my 16 port unit. Well everything worked mostly fine until I tried to restore to new hdd and it cant find the server. I tried it on a different machine as a couple of the onboard NIC's on AMD chipsets I have dont play well with the restore process. On the tried and true platform it also wouldnt find the server after several attempts auto and manual entering the path. The onyl way I was able to get the restore to work was to patch the server and client cables into the router and then it worked just fine. It would be nice if I didnt have to change cables to do a restore. It seems there are some residual settings in the switch's config that are blocking the connection. I have done router settings many times but never had a switch with management console and not even sure i can get in it. Now come to think of it, my remote acess isnt working either when plugged into the switch. I guess I could leave it plugged into the router but I have to believe the extra "hop" back and forth between switch and router would have to slow things down a bit.  Any advice would be appreciated.

    thanks

  • Configuring your managed switch is kind of off topic for this forum, and configuring (or telling you how to configure, which is the same thing in the end) a used managed switch from afar, with no knowledge of how it was previously configured, is really very difficult. Possibly your switch has been configured with multiple VLANs, or with some other unexpected (in a home) confguration which restricts traffic in some way.

HP acquired 3Com at some point; for documentation on 3Com switches before the aquisition you could look here, and for products after you could look here.

  • Thanks for the reply Ken, Does it sound like a good idea to gain access to the management console and revert all to factory default settings?

  • That's probably where you should start, yes. :) Beyond that, the documentation and Google/Bing are likely to be your best resources for getting it configured.
