  • In order to use your Acer OEM Windows Vista product key, you'll need to reinstall Windows Vista using only an Acer Windows Vista recovery disc.

As Carey noted, if you used a genuine Vista installation DVD that came in a full retail or upgrade retail package (the fancy clear plastic box), then what you are experiencing is expected behavior.  Retail products cannot be activated using OEM Product Keys.  Likewise, OEM products cannot be activated using the retail Product Key.

An OEM Product Key is the type of key found on the Certificate of Authenticity (CoA) affixed to a new computer, such as your Acer.

What did work for XP, and may work for Vista (I can't say for sure as I have not had an opportunity to try it personally), is doing the installation of Vista Home Premium using a systembuilder/OEM (aka "OEM COA") installation DVD, and then when it comes time to enter the Product Key, use the Product Key on the CoA affixed to your Acer computer and NOT the Product Key that came with the OEM DVD.  This method when used with XP required that you do a telephonic activation, which takes about 7 minutes.  Again, let me empahasize that this DOES work with XP but I cannot say from experience if it will work with Vista.

What is guaranteed to work is the correct Reinstallation DVD from Acer.
