Problem with getting Windows vista updates and Microsoft programs

  I believe I have a virus that is not letting me download any microsoft/vista updates. I had Norton but that screwed me up even more and AVG is no help. Avg locks up every time I try to search for viruses.
  Is there anyway to get rid of the virus or get the updates?
  When I try to install updates, this code error comes up: 80244019 window update encountered an unknown error.
