WHS Backup of Windows 7 Fails RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi there Everyone,

I have just installed WHS on a new computer, everything works apart from backups, my client laptop is running windows 7, what happens is when I go to backup the client laptop (using a wired network) it gets to 5% and says backing up system reserved, reorganizing data on server, 5 mins later i get booted off the console and cannot log in again via the console, remote desktop or actually on the server. I cannot even access my shares. The only way to get the server responding again is to reboot it. Does anyone have any ideas please.

  • Hi Garethm1976,

You might find the problem is the network driver - go to device manager and rollback the driver and see if that helps in any way.  Let us know how you get on.

    Cheers,
    Al

  • Definitely your issue is a network issue affecting your server, per Al's post. In addition to the network driver, other things that could conceivably cause this problem: failing network interface card (and if it's a motherboard NIC, just get a standard PCI NIC now and save yourself the headache because it will fail :) ), network cable,  bad port on your switch or router (or a failing switch or router), etc.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

The Machine I have installed WHS on is brand new out of box, just took out the oem hdd and inserted a new blank 1TB HDD, and installed WHS, I did have problems at first finding the correct drivers for my Network card, so will try a roll back later, (I might even have the wrong drivers installed, but apart from the backup, everything else works, ie. I can get on the internet, d/l with utorrent and stream with ps3 media server.) but I really don't think the card would be failing. Hope this helps and Ill keep you updated.

  • Hi there, Ok still no joy, I tried to roll back the driver to no avail, I then uninstalled the driver to see if windows update could find the correct driver (I temparily connected up a wireless dongle so the server could go online, windows update found no drivers for it, so had to go back and install the nvidia nforce drivers again. I am pretty sure these are the correct drivers, but if anyone can confirm this for me from these details of the original machine.
It was a Acer Aspire X1301

Here is a belarc report minus my serial and ip address I hope this helps me identify the correct drivers for the network card.

  • Oh and I am getting these errors in the log, MRxSmb, "The master browser has received a server annoucement from the computer (PC Name) that believes it is the master browser for the domain transport NetBT_Tcpip{B2BF11E8-9612-47E4. The master browser is stopping or an election is being forced.". Event ID 8003.
Backup of (PC Name) D:\ has failed event ID 262.

    Hope this helps

I am getting the same error, but I think this is a red herring. The problem seems to be in the Realtek drivers.

  • For the benefit of someone who may have the same problem - I tried every combination of driver I could, going back as far as 2007. Finally the only thing that worked were the drivers from Feb 2010 (at both ends), and Jumbo frames turned off.

Performance hit I guess, but it works!

  • I am having the same problem, but dont think its the server. I think its a conflict with the master browser election and its my laptop that gets kicked off when this occurs, causing the backups to fail. Havent found a cure yet though.

  • My google research initially pointed to the master browser issue as well, but following the listed debug steps had no effect. Jumbo frames was the culprit for me.
