After daily usage since Oct 2011 Windows updates Security Essentials on a reboot and now I get a genuine validation error. RRS feed

  • Question

  • This PC has been registered since October 2011 and has had many validation checks over that period.  Now after a windows update of security essentials on a reboot yesterday, I got a message saying Windows did not pass genuine validation.  It looks like the update has a problem.  How do I get his fixed?

  • At a guess, you finally got around to installing the Service Pack 1 - which removes known Activation Exploits as part of it's pre-install cleanup routine.

The 'upgrade' performed was an illegal one - using a hacker's Activation Exploit to bypass activation and validation restrictions. - and was never paid for. You still have the right to use Vista on that machine, but not Windows 7. Had the upgrade been genuine, it would have used a Retail Key, and the seller would have been obliged to provide the original media and Proof of License data that came with the upgrade. Without that, the upgrade is not valid, whatever the validation results are.

You can probably order a *real* set of recovery media for your machine from the manufacturer. - or download a retail installer for Vista, and use that, together with your COA Key, to install the legitimate licensed Vista.

  • To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
     Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
      - **in your own thread**, please

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

  • The part of the COA sticker with the version an edition of Windows has worn off and not visible.  However I can read the product key and there are 3 other "numbers" on the COA.  The keyboard of the laptop does have a sticker that says Windows Vista.  I bought this laptop with Windows 7 loaded on Oct 13, 2011 via Ebay.   Here is the output from the diagnostic report:

  • Removing the Windows versioning from the COA sticker is a common ploy of counterfeiters.

Your machine originally shipped with Vista installed, according to the SLIC table in the BIOS - and is therefore only licensed for Vista, unless you also have the Upgrade media and Key.

You will need to reformat and reinstall using legitimate media and Key - either using the manufacturer's Recovery media, or retail media.

  • Can you tell me why the license code is being marked as not genuine?  It has been certified many other times when doning Microsoft updates and downloading Microsoft optional updates.  Why is it only now bing marked as not genuine.  Did someone else steal my license code and cause a duplicate?  If so, why do I have to pay for it?  The seller of this machine had upgraded it to Windows 7 and the recovery media is a separate partition on the drive.  That and the recovery DVD I created when I first got the machine are the only recovery media I have.  So again, from the report I sent, can you tell me why the license code is being marked as not genuine?

  • I looked in the Installed updates and found that Service Pack 1 (KB976932) was installed 1/1/2011, which is a little over 10 months before I bought the laptop.  This means the activation exploits had been removed and since I registered with Microsoft and Microsoft has validated the license many times since 10/20/2011 the upgrade is genuine.  The person I got the laptop from is still a sellar on Ebay and has 100% satisfaction ratings.  It appears to me someone has stollen my license key and caused it to be marked as a duplicate.  There is no way I'm going to downgrade to Vista and would prefer to have Microsoft alter the license code on this laptop to one that isn't black listed.  I understand you don't work for Microsoft and you're limited in what you can do, so how do I get help from Microsoft?

  • You would need to purchase a Full license for Windows 7 Pro - these are getting hard to find (legitimately!).

You can also buy a Get Genuine Kit - attempt validation at www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate, and follow the instructions.

Not that the GGK license also includes a secondary set of terms which limits the Key to use on the affected machine, and it cannot be moved to another, even if the machine dies 2 minutes after activation (which is why I prefer to recommend buying a full retail license instead for the minimal extra expense).
