Hello david206,
In your situation I would backup any data and then do a fresh installation of XP Pro using the supplied Dell OS Reinstallation CD.

Hello LM_MATTY0044,
Do this for each of the two computers showing as nongenuine:
Please refer to the link below and run the MGA Diagnostics tool:http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012
You will be prompted to either “Run” or “Save” the tool. Choose to “Run” the tool and follow the on-screen prompts. You will receive an “Internet Explorer-Security Warning” dialog box for the “Windows Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool”; you must choose to “Run” this tool when prompted.
Once you are presented with the Diagnostics tool choose “Continue” to run the diagnostic report. If the “RESOLVE” button is available after running the diagnostics, please click “RESOLVE” to allow the diagnostic tool to attempt a repair.
1. After running the MGA Diagnostic tool, click on the “Windows” tab and then click on “Copy”.
2. Please return to this post and “Paste” the results here for additional review.
Next look on the computer itself, in the documentation you received with the computer or with your retail purchase of Windows to see if you have a Certificate of Authenticity (COA). If you have one, tell us about the COA. Tell us:
1. What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center, or another version of Windows?
2. Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?
3. Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?
4. DO NOT post the Product Key that may be printed on the CoA.
Not sure what to look for? See this page for reference: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/en/coa.mspx
NOTE: The data collected with the Genuine Diagnostics Tool does NOT contain any information that can personally identify you and can be fully reviewed, by you, before being posted.

Edited!
Here's another validation problem that's driving me round the bend!
I have a new Dell T3400 (all my seven machines are Dell) . It came with Vista Professional and I took the downgrade option to install XP Pro using the supplied OEM Dell Disk (Vista ha not been installed) due to some custom software incompatabilities.
It all runs fine - until I turn on Updates, then it insists on Validation which i don't ever recollect happening before - but since I can't activate it as it wants me to, presumably because it is already activated being a Dell OEM install on the machine, I can't get any further?
It will not activate using the web Validation Advisor Beta system despite many, many attempts. The key that the diagnostic tool comes up with is the same as the one in the i386 dir on the supplied Dell XP CD. Having to use that tool as I have no Activate Windows on the system menu available (since a Dell OEM CD iinstall self validates AFAIAA).
I have given up on the phone - Dell say to phone MS and then I get caught in a loop at MS that I can't get out of and get nowhere.
Any bright ideas please? I'm in the UK. I did try the Vista key but no go.- Edited by david206 Wednesday, October 14, 2009 2:57 PM

Hello david206,
What happens if you try to start the Activation wizard manually?
Click Start, click Run, type the following command, and then click OK:%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a
[Note the space between msoobe.exe and /a.]
If you can get the Wizard to run, try the automatic online activation.

I had come to much the same answer. I think I may wait until I have my copies of Windows 7 since I have had more luck on another machine running the RC than I did with Vista and possibly the XP Mode will solve my problem with some of the software I run.
Thanks again for your help and advice.Thursday, October 15, 2009 7:33 AM -
An addenda. I hadn't spotted when I replied above that this morning, the Updates Required warning icon had appeared in the system tray. Now, I have done nothing further since the last attempt at validation - which was what was stopping me starting setting up updates.
I ran a custom install with no problem, restarted and guess what? All is well

The original poster's issue was resolved by information contained in this thread. If that information did not resolve your issue, then you do not have the same issue and should create your own thread, post a Diagnostic Report and a short description of the issue.

Hello LM_MATTY0044,
The answer to install a fresh XP Pro was directed at poster "David206" who "hijacked" your thread back in October.
You have written there are two computers involved. For simplicity's sake, let's take care of one computer at a time :-)
Pick the first computer you want take care of and follow these instructions:
Please refer to the link below and run the MGA Diagnostics tool:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012
You will be prompted to either “Run” or “Save” the tool. Choose to “Run” the tool and follow the on-screen prompts. You will receive an “Internet Explorer-Security Warning” dialog box for the “Windows Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool”; you must choose to “Run” this tool when prompted.
Once you are presented with the Diagnostics tool choose “Continue” to run the diagnostic report. After running the MGA Diagnostic tool, click on the “Windows” tab and then click on “Copy”.

Tell us:

Hello rwmdrifter,
Please do not piggyback on someone else's thread, especially an answered one.
Please start your own thread by clicking the Ask A Question link, then copy/paste your report into the new thread.
Also, don't forget to include the required info about the CoA and the other installation materials.

It's also not a good idea to post in a thread that is over a year old.
