Office Update Does not recognize my Valid Product as Valid

Question
-
Hi and thanks -
I am running Windows XP SP2 and Microsoft Office XP Pro. I have had these valid, licensed products on my computer since 2000 or so. I have always been able to access update sites with no problem. The computer is a Gateway early P4 - 1.4 (1999 vintage) which came supplied with ME, and I upgraded to XP Pro, which I bought from buy.com at the same time I purchased Office XP Pro.
Recently, my Office applications began running slowly, so after running "detect and repair", I went to "office on the web" to see if updating would help.
Officeupdate told me that my product was invalid because it had not been activated. But I activated the product in 2000! Just to say I tried everything, I went to a couple of applications (word, outlook, excel) and when I attempted to activate the product, I got the "This product has already been activated" splashscreen message.
It was suggested to me that I run the activation wizard, and activate over the phone. But the activation wizard won't run, as the computer knows that the applications are validated already.
I will happlily supply whatever information you need. Thank you for your help.
Peace
Joseph

Can you try the following steps? Please make sure you have your product key (for Office) available
.
1) Go to: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Data\
2) Delete the data.dat file.
3) This data.dat file is for Office (not OGA).
4) Once the file has been deleted, open an Office application such as MS Word (or your own personal favorite) and ACTIVATE it.
5) After product activation is successful, try revalidating (this is the OGA part; Office Genuine Advantage) by visiting: http://www.microsoft.com/genuine and click "Validate Office"Please let us know if this resolves the problem.
