Invalid product key RRS feed

  • Hi i'm trying to activate my windows vista, my 25 opportunities have past and now I'm trying to activate the product and the system is telling me: "number is invalid, check it and re-type it", already did, and it's still telling me it's invalid, I'm sure this is the right number because the sticker on the bottom of the computer lists it as the product key number...

     

    The product I'm trying to activate is Windows Vista Home premium

    I am using the product key from a sticker located on the bottom of my pc tower

    Its a Compaq Presario Desktop SR5250NX

     

    I already runed the genuine diagnostics tool and this is the report:

  • Hello isaaac,

     

      Computers built by large computer manufactrers (such as Compaq) that come with Vista pre-installed are automaticly Activated from the factory.  They also come with two (2) product keys:

     

    1) OEM SLP: This key come in Vista when it comes from the Factory. This key is geared to work with the special instructions found only on that Manufacturer's computer hardware. So when Vista was installed using the OEM SLP key  (at the factory) Vista looks at the motherboard and see the special instructions and Activates itself. (that's why you did need to Activate your computer after you brought it home)

     

    2) COA SLP: This is the Product key that you see on the sticker on the side of your computer. It's a valid product key, but should only be used in limited situations. The key does require activation, but you must Activate by Phone.

     

    Your computer currently has the OEM SLP key installed. Is your Vista asking to be Activated?

     

    If no:  

     Then do not try to change the product key to the COA SLP key

     

     

    If yes:

     Then first off, there is a Support Doc: "You may be prompted to activate Windows Vista on a computer on which Windows Vista was already activated by a Volume License or OEM installation" at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;931573  That I beleive is specific to your issue. Please follow the resolution portion of the doc.

     

      The that does not resolve your issue, please follow the steps below. If the first set of steps does not resolve, move on to the next set of steps.

     

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Step set #1

     

    (If you access to the start button)

    1) Click the Start button

    2) Type cmd in the Start Search field

    3) At the top the Start window, you will see cmd.exe

    4) Right Click cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator

    5) Type: cscript %windir%\System32\slmgr.vbs /ilc %windir%\System32\licensing\ppdlic\Security-Licensing-SLC-ppdlic.xrm-ms

    6) Hit the Enter key

    7) Reboot 2 times

     

    (If you Do Not access to the start button)

    1) Click the option Access computer with reduced functionality

    2) A Browser will open, type: %windir%\system32 into the address field

    3) Find the file cmd.exe

    4) Right Click on the cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator

    5) Type: cscript %windir%\System32\slmgr.vbs /ilc %windir%\System32\licensing\ppdlic\Security-Licensing-SLC-ppdlic.xrm-ms

    6) Hit the Enter key

    7) Reboot 2 times

    7) Click the Start button

    8) Type: slui.exe 4 and hit the Enter key

    9) Select your location in the drop down menu and click the Next button

    10) The next screen provides the number to call to Activate by Phone

     

    NOTE: when you call that number, you will first hear an Automated Voice that will try to Activate Vista for you. If the Automated Voice gives you an option to talk to a Live Activation Rep, select that option. If not, do not enter any numbers. This should force the Automated Voice to transfer you to a Live Activation Rep. Trying to Activate thru the Automated Voice will not work, in your case, only thru the Live Activation Rep will your Activation be successful.

     

    Once completed, you may need to reboot twice.


     

    (If you Do Not access to the start button)

    5) Type: net stop slsvc  (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)

    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing

    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar

    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32

    9) Type net start slsvc

    10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)

    11) Reboot Twice

    12) You may be required to Re-Activate. Use the Activate by Phone method outlined below

     

     

    Activate by Phone steps:

     

    a) If you have access to the Start button: Click the Start button, and type in "slui.exe 4" in the search field and then press the "Enter" key. This will bring up the Activate by Phone dialog window. Follow the steps provided by the window. The phone activation process should only take about 6 minutes.


    b) If you do not have access to the Start button: Reboot and login to Vista, a dialog window will come up. In that window, click the option "Access computer with reduced functionality". Once you do that, Internet Explorer or Firefox browser will open. In the address bar type "c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe" press enter, a new window will come up, type: slui 4 and hit enterand follow steps to Activate over the Phone.


    NOTE: The key to this process is that you need to talk to a Live Activation Rep! When you first call, you will be interacting with an Automated Voice, either select the option to talk to a Live Rep or if there is no option, do not enter any numbers. This should force the automated voice to tansfer you to a Live Rep.

  • i bought office home and student--product key not valid

    I bought the vista program at Future shop and installed on my Toshiba (which had 25 uses free)  I can not use Vista because product key is invalid.  HELP

  • I purchased office home and student 2007 at Future shop.  My product key does not work. Please advise.  The product key is on the plastic box of the CD.

    i have read all the previous threads and i have religiously followed all of your steps. however, every time i complete a step, reboot twice, and open word 2007, it still asks for im product ID. i enter the number on the bottom of my laptop, and it still claims that the code is invalid. i have been severly tempted on many occasions to purchase a large hammer and show the laptop who's boss, or sell this infernal machine and buy a trusty typewriter.(a little antiquated but at least its reliable) the laptop was bought for me as a christmas present, and i have been happily ignoring the product key request until it promptly locked word. the laptop is a compaq presario C700 and is otherwise perfect. anyway, here is the suggested diagnostic report:

    Computer manufacturers often install a trial version of Microsoft Office.  If you are getting a prompt to type in a Product Key when opening a Microsoft Office program, it s likely the trial period is over and you'll need to purchase a license (product key) for Microsoft Office.

  • ahhhhhhhhhhhh yes well that was it! to be honest, i feel like a bit of an imbecile, but i wish that compaq had made me aware of the situation, as that significant fact was not written down anywhere! thanks for the advice, but i fear nothing will ever recover the 1 and a half hour spent trying to sort it out!
