Cannot Change Windows 7 Product Key

Question
-
Hello everyone!
A quick background on my issue: A friend and I custom built a computer and attempted to install a copy of Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit. The copy of Windows 7 was received from our university (which grants each of its students one free copy of any software operating system). Upon trying to install the CD, however, we ran into several problems that would not allow us to even begin installation. My friend guessed that it must have been the build of the operating system that wouldn't let it go through ("debugged" or something or other).
He told me to download a pirated copy to see if it would work, and then simply change my product key to the legit copy that I received from the university. The pirated copy installed fine, but I am unable to change my Windows 7 Product Key!!!
I viewed other threads and tried the following:
Right Clicking "Computer" in start menu and clicking Properties --> scroll to bottom --> click "Change Product Key" .... The "Change Product Key" button does not even appear here as it shows in screen shots of other computers.
I also tried going into the command console as an administrator and typing slmgr.vbs -ipk <type your product key here> .... This gave me the message "'slmgr.vbs' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
Lastly I tried opening up SLUI 3 ... This gave me the message "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.

The crack used on the pirated copy was RemoveWAT by Hazar.
Click the Start Orb & type in cmd.exe into the search menu.
Right click it and Run as administrator.
Type the following command: sfc /scannow & hit enter.
Wait for the process to finish, once it's done. Reboot the system.
Then re-post another MGADiag Report.
Sunday, August 7, 2011 9:17 AM -
You need to first remove the crack imposed by RemoveWATIf RemoveWAT is still present, run it – and pick the option to RestoreWAT. This should repair the mess it’s made. Then you may need to uninstall and reinstall the WAT update (KB971033).Once complete, post back with another MGADiag report.

Noel,
I'm not sure if your information complements tb19's, but I'm not sure how to go about doing that.
Sunday, August 7, 2011 4:59 PM -
You have an OEM_SLP installation in what appears to be a Retail motherboard - this is NEVER going to be legitimate.
You need to purchase a FUll Retail license for Windows (of whatever edition you need) and install that.

Do you mean to tell me that I cannot make use of my legitimate product key in any way whatsoever?
Microsoft doesn't have a recovery CD for download or anything like that?
I understand that my current version is illegitimate and it must and will be uninstalled.
If anyone has any advice on how I can use my product key, I would greatly appreciate it. I mean, after all, the reason I came here was not to be told to go out and buy a new one (anyone can tell me that), but for a solution to my specific problem.
If there is NO solution whatsoever, I guess I'll have to stick with a 32-bit version of Windows 7 (which installs fine for some reason)...

The Key in use here is ONLY legitimate when used with the Recovery disks for the machine for which it was originally issued – in this case an Asus machine. If you have replaced the motherboard under anything other than warranty conditions you invalidated the license at that point. If you purchased the software, you were sold a counterfeit, or at least were sold the wrong item.Is the ‘legitimate’ Key you are using the same as the one above?
Noel Paton | Nil Carborundum Illegitemi | CrashFixPC | The Three-toed SlothMonday, August 8, 2011 10:16 AMModerator -
The Key listed above is NOT the legit one. I assume that's the one provided by the illegal software.
I have a separate key that IS legit. I know it's legit because I used it to activate Windows 7 Professional 32-Bit when 64-Bit failed me. I'm trying to get 64-Bit now as I originally intended and use my key for it.

So – why didn’t you say so?you should use the Change Product Key link on the System Properties page to change the key to your ‘legitimate’ one – you will probably then need to activate by phone.

I mentioned it in the original post.
"He told me to download a pirated copy to see if it would work, and then simply change my product key to the legit copy that I received from the university."
--------
Okay so now, I have yet another problem. When I change the product key, it simply says that the product key does not appear to be valid... is this because I used it already for the past 32-Bit installation?
Also, there is no option to activate by phone at which point I would prefer right now. But with no option to activate by phone, I don't know what the phone number is for the United States phone line.
Do I have to call to tell them to deactivate use of the 32-Bit version so that I can use it on the 64-Bit version?
If so, is there a page where I can get the phone number for the United States phone line so that I can speak with a representative?

Great - I would be very wary of that install, however, as it's likely that the originating disk is a pirated copy, and you can't guarantee that it doesn't have all sorts of strange malware present.
You should reinstall afresh, using ORIGINAL MS media.
In the meantime, please post a new MGADiag report so that we can check that all is apparently well with this activation.

Hello! My friend I have some idea I guess it will help you. Make sure you follow the steps 1. Goto search and type SLUI right click and then click on open file location. 2. After you click on open file location, that will bring lots of stuff egnore rest and search for Regedt32. 3. Click on regrdt32 and click on yes. 4. On right side you will see name, types and date . Follow the NAME down below and goto PRODUCTID and double click on that . 5. After double click type manually or paste your new product key. 6. Restart your computer.Friday, September 30, 2016 8:07 AM

1) this thread is over 5 years old!
2) your advice is just plain wrong - not to mention dangerous!
It is NOT possible to make such entries directly into the registry since the Product Key is encrypted before it's entered in the registry by the system.
