Protect Client Backup with Raid RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hallo,

Are client backups raid protected with WHS?

If not, is there a way to do so?

    Thanks,
    Franz

RAID is not supported on WHS and the backup database is not duplicated on the server the way the folders can be.  However, if you want to backup the backup database, you can either do it manually by following the instructions in the WHS Home Computer Backup and Restore Technical Brief or by using the BDBB add-in.

  • I am not sure if I understand this correctly.
When I perform a backup of my pc to the WHS using the connector software, where is the backup stored? Is this part of the backup database? The add in provides duplicating the WHS backups. Does this mean, that the backups are then duplicated automatically or just a manual triggered WHS database backup is duplicated?

    Thanks :-)

  • Hi Kairya21,

    From the manual:

"The backup database is stored entirely in the folder D:\folders\{00008086-058D-4C89-AB57-A7F909A47AB4}\. The content of this folder is migrated by Windows Home Server Drive Extender from the primary data partition to a secondary data partition if the home server has more than one hard drive. "

    and:

"The Windows Home Server backup database is not duplicated by Windows Home Server Drive Extender. So if you lose a single hard drive on your home server, you could possibly lose all of the backups of your home computers. "

Are the backups protected in the case of a hard disk crash?

    Thanks!

    No, they aren't.

If you need that additional protection, you can use the Backup DataBase Backup add-in or the equivalent manual method to take a copy of the database on external storage, or you can use the same add-in to turn on duplication for the backup database. Note that duplication provides imperfect protection for the data (PC backups) in the backup database. If a major disaster should affect your location, such as fire, flood, or major storm which damages/destroys your home, you can still lose data. A complete backup strategy involves multiple copies of the data, in multiple locations.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • Of course, additional data protection in case of physical impact such as fire,.. is necessary.
I did install the add on mentioned before and activated duplication for both WHS backups and BDBB backups.

Do I understand this correctly that after activating these both features client backups are stored on two different hard drives?

    thanks :-)

You should check with the author of the add-in for that info (I personally don't use it).
