Accessing a symbolic link to a non vail whs server in a VAIL share RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a non VAIL whs server that contains content that I want to serve using VAIL.  I have VAIL setup properly and I can access it remotely without a problem.  I created a symbolic link in my "Recorded TV" share on VAIL to the "Recorded TV" share on my non VAIL whs server.

    mklink /d <local link path> <remote share>

I setup the "Recorded TV" share and security on the non VAIL server so that guest, anonymous_login, and Everyone have read access.  I used fsutil behaviour set SymlinkEvaluation L2L:1 R2R:1 L2R:1 R2L:1 on the VAIL server.  <----- not sure if if this was necessary.

Now if I simply try to access the \Recorded TV\tv folder remotely using a web browser connected to the VAIL server,

I get the following error: Either the folder no longer exists or you do not have the required permissions to access the folder.

I know that the problem has to do with the Recorded TV share/security on the non vail whs server because I did the same exact thing for music (symbolic link to my hp media vault nas from VAIL) and it works fine and I can access  the music stored on my hp media vault nas from a web browser to whs vail remotely.

  • You can't manage permissions on Windows Home Server shares, other than through the console. Any permissions you set from the server desktop will eventually be reset.

  • Also, I have used gpedit.msc to add "Recorded TV" share in Computer Configuration->Windows Settings->Security Settings->Local Policies->Security Options->Network access: Shares that can be accessed anonymously and I also set "Let Everyone permissions apply to anonymous users" enabled.

I still can't access the linked folder from the web browser connected whs vail.

  • How do I setup a whs share to allow anonymous access that does not prompt for authentication?  I can do this with the hp media vault nas and the symbolic links from created in my whs vail shares work properly.  Is this possible with whs?

  • Probably not applicable; it's information from 2007 for Windows Home Server V1, not Vail.

  • My original question pertained to sharing from whs V1 to vail so the above link should be applicable...I decided to use unraid to store the data instead of whs V1...
