    When Product Key updates fail, typically it is for one of two major reasons:  (1) the nongenuine installation has so many hacks and cracks that the updater cannot repair all of them, and (2) the updater cannot establish a reliable connection to the MS servers because of an internet connectivity problem on the computer, sometimes due to protective programs installed on the computer being updated, such as antispyware or firewall programs.

    AFAIK, there has never been a specific fix for the somewhat generic error message you are receiving.  Unfortunately, if the PK updater does not work, then you have to offload your data and then repartition, reformat, and cleanly install.  That is why the WGA Kit also includes a genuine Microsoft hologrammed Windows XP installation CD, which they sent you as part of your order.  It could take a week or two for you to receive it, depending upon postal/delivery service.

    I noticed that you have an HP Pavilion computer.  If the computer still has a Certificate of Authenticity affixed to the computer, another option you could have taken was to order a set of Recovery/Reinstallation discs from HP, assuming they are still available for that exact model.  Here is the support page for that model:  http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=470505&lang=en  Click on the CD-ROM Order Page--Recovery Disks to see if they are available.  I happened to order some from HP last week and they were pretty cheap, less than $20 delivered by mail.
