Home Office & Student 2007 pre-intalled on HP Laptop returns error message for Product Key RRS feed

  • Question

  • I recently bought an HP Pavilion laptop with Windows 7 and pre-installed with a 60 day trial version of Home Office & Student 2007.

Now I am trying to convert this to a full version but when I try to enter the Product Key (taken from the label on the base of the PC) I get an error message saying it is an invalid key. I assume this cannot be the case because I doubt Hewlett Packard sell corrupt versions of Microsoft products so what else could be the problem?

    Thanks Rich...

  • Hello Rich5ltr,

The product key on the Windows 7 Certificate of Authenticity (CoA) on the bottom of your laptop is for.....Windows 7.  It is not intended or expected that this Product Key would be used to activate any Microsoft product other than the Windows 7 installation on your computer.

In order to continue using the Trial of Office H&S 2007 with full functionality after the Trial period expires, you have to buy a license for the product in the form of a Product Key.  Since Office H&S 2010 has been released, Microsoft no longer supports the direct online purchase of Office H&S 2007 product keys.

So if you want to continue to use MS Office with full functionality, your choices are:

    1.  Purchase a full packaged product of Office H&S 2007 at a trusted local retailer, and enter the product key you will find inside the full retail package into your Office H&S 2007 installation.  This will activate a full license for Office H&S 2007 on that particular computer.  The full retail license allows you to install Office H&S 2007 on two additional computers as well, as long as the Office installations on those computers are used by members of your household and and not used for commercial or nonprofit purposes.

    2.  Uninstall Office 2007 and download and install the current retail Trial for Office H&S 2010 directly from Microsoft:  http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/try/try-office-2010-FX101868838.aspx  At the end of the Trial for Office H&S 2010, you will be able to purchase a full retail license directly from Microsoft.  This license likewise can be installed on up to three computers with the same restrictions as above.

    3.  If you are sure you want Office H&S 2010, purchase a full packaged product from a trusted local retailer, then install it on the computer (by default the full packaged product will uninstall previous editions of Office).  Activate normally by using the product key found inside the full retail package.

  • Hello Rich5ltr

I am sorry to hear that you are not able to activate your Office software.

Microsoft, since the release of Office 2010 on June 15th of 2010, stopped selling Office 2007 software.  Therefore any Office 2007 software, is not available for purchase from the Microsoft Store or Microsoft. I apologize for the inconvenience.

To view a list of retailers who may have Office 2007 software available, please visit http://store.microsoft.com/OtherRetailers .

I have been able to locate a copy of the program on this store site. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_4_28?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=office+home+and+student+2007&sprefix=office+home+and+student+2007

Otherwise you can remove the trial software and purchase Office 2010 software from the MS store at the link provided below.
