  • Steve 3100,

Occasionally we have had some customers that purchased valid copies of Windows or received them when purchasing an OEM system but failed validation. In most cases this has been determined to be the result of the actual Product Key used to install the current version of Windows XP to be blocked. This most often has occurred by the computer being repaired and a Blocked Product Key being used on the computer at that time.

To confirm there are no other blocking issues with your validation such as clock out of synch or IE settings blocking the validation process please run the WGA Diagnostics located here:

    http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/

If everything here is confirmed as functioning properly and you still have issues validating could you please run the wgadiag tool here and post the information for us.

    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

Without actually posting your Product Key in this post compare the last 15 characters of your COA to the last 15 characters in the Diag output. If they are not the same you will have to change the product key. The easiest way to do this without having to re-install applications or lose data is to refer to the Repair Method in this KB Article.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341/en-us

Warning: as with any such major procedure it is highly recommended you backup all critical/personal data on your computer that you would not want to lose and ensure you have the software to re-install your applications should something happen.

We can also attempt to change the key using the Product Key Update tool below. The Genuine Advantage Product Key Update Tool is only valid for users attempting to change their current non-genuine Product Key to a genuine COA sticker or genuine Product Key – all without a reinstall! http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=50346&clcid=0x409

    Thanks,

  • Steve:

The error code 80054005 for the Product Key Update Tool is related to a firewall or an Antivirus tool that is blocking the Update Tool from connecting to the MS servers to download updated files. Do you have those running?

I'm glad that you got your CD's so quickly :)

  • Steve3100,

The Key Updater needs access to MS servers.  If you are using a firewall, please establish a special firewall rule to allow the utility unrestricted access to the internet.  Also, check Antivirus and antimalware programs to be sure they are not interfering as well.

If necessary, temporarily disable any program that could be preventing internet access to the Utility.

I dropped my Firewall and turned off my Symantec anti-virus. Then I reran the Key Update tool. Same negative results.

I am turning my Firewall back on before my home page gets transferred to some guy who is running an operation out of a backroom in a bar in Namibia.

Thanks for the suggestion. I would appreciate any further suggestions. Have a good day.

Are you running behind a proxy server?

  • Phil:

I have an in-home desktop computer with a cable broadband connection to the Internet through Comcast ISP.

I do not know if this involves a proxy server. Frankly, I am not sure what a proxy server is.

BREAKING NEWS!  My Windows Genuine Advantage Kit arrived in the mail today. This I think is about three days after I initiated the upgrade process.  The approval of my payment (a credit card charge) took about two days and that on a weekend. I was led to expect a two to four week wait for the kit. Thank you to the guys at MS who are handling this process. This kind of responsiveness takes a lot of the stress out of this process.

Now, will I be able to use the CD Kit to accomplish the validation that we have not been able to accomplish with the on-line tools so far? I'll open it up and give it a go.
