Cannot restore XP Pro from Restore CD, can't find WHS

Question
-
I am trying to restore my XP Pro to a new hard drive. I boot up with the Restore CD and it finds the host network device and all the drive interfaces, but when it searches for my WHS, it can't find it. When I try to search manually with the 'WHSServerName', it gives me a network error. The host was connected and backed up on the same network earlier the same day, so I know that WHS can communicate with this host.Thursday, May 21, 2009 7:06 PM

DHCP must be enabled, because the Restore CD uses DHCP for determining it's IP address. As long as the server's IP address is in the same subnet that your router hands out everything should work, even if you manually assign an IP address to your server.
Your description of needing several reboots before your restore completes makes me think that you may have a problem with your home network. Some such problems could include cabling, a problem with your server's network interface, your switch (or router, if you don't have a separate switch), etc. I've never needed to reboot a PC (other than booting the Restore CD and then rebooting when the restore completes).
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)- Marked as answer by Lara JonesModerator Saturday, June 13, 2009 5:45 PM

I have a similiar problem I posted a couple of hours ago. Been trying all day. I am pretty sure it has to do with network drivers, but so far no workaround I have tried works. Ken and Olaf both responded quickly to my question but nothing suggested so far has worked.Thursday, May 21, 2009 8:06 PM

If I understand correctly, you're dealing with RAID set-up. pksky is dealing with a single hard drive. I've used Olaf's suggestion on restoring a XP drive and it worked for me. It does require a working computer that has the WHS client installed.Friday, May 22, 2009 1:19 AM -
This continues to be a problem.
WHS is using a static IP as does the host to be restored. The net is a subnet running on a switch connected to a Smoothwall Express router.
I have attempted to make the restore from the CD about six or seven times now looking at various things on WHS. I am seeing some erratic behavior, including a loss of connectability when I go back to the original host hard drive. But the last time I rebooted to the original host HD, this did not occur. I have seen "media disconnected" in ipconfig for WHS and "network cable unplugged errors". But not consistantly.
2 days now of and about four hours of work.Friday, May 22, 2009 5:59 PM -
Tried using DHCP to assign a static IP address to the MAC address. Now WHS is found by the restore disk. So, DHCP must be enabled for WHS for it to be found by the restore disk?
In the course of the restore, there are other network errors that seem to be cured by a reboot to the restore disk again. Eventually, the restore completes, but it takes a few reboots to the restore disk.Saturday, May 23, 2009 2:59 PM -
