Synchronous workflows and infinite loop error RRS feed

  • I thought I'd post this in case someone else hits the issue as synchronous workflows become used more heavily.

    I recently found that a heavily customized entity which had several synchronous workflows was suddenly throwing infinite loop errors yet when the problem workflows were set back to run asynchronously, they ran fine.

    The issue was a result of the way crm handles (or doesn't!) the execution order of synchronous workflows. The plugin registration tool can be used to edit the execution order or plugins but this does not currently allow for the changing of execution order of synchronous workflow. So, I turned to Tanguy Touzard MVP to build an addition to his fabulous xrmtoolkit (https://xrmtoolbox.codeplex.com/) which he kindly did. Using this you can change the execution 'rank' and so control / avoid the infinite loop errors. In my case, I set my synchronous workflows to have an order of 1, 2 etc and any other plugins +10 higher.
